improved beholders (tactics) anti-magic ray problems

Post by jefklak »

Hiya again,

As some of you know, I'm soloing a blade (read the report here) and I'm currently trying to initiate the cult of the eyeless quest. The blade just reached level 18 and I can cast tensers transformation which turns me into a killing machine :D Check these stats out, after being fully buffed: (could do better, forgot draw upon holy might and such)

Anyway, only ONE puny beholder outright kills me. Their improved versions cast like 12 spells/round? I don't know, but the graphics are flying all over the place the moment I unpause the game, it's INSANE! paralyze, hold, flesh to stone, death spells, inflict, major wounds - okay, I can resist most paralyze stuff and I have spell deflection AND spell immunity: abjuration (next time necromancy) on. But one big problem - their anti-magic ray completely strips away all my precious buffs. The two skeleton warriors die after a minute or two, and without buffs or summons, I follow very soon.

Is there _any_ way to resist these anti-magic rays?
Any tips on slaying improved verisons of beholders?
(Without shield of balduran of course... Not going to use it if I get UAI either)

Thanks :)
Edit: my Magic Resistance is 15 (sword balduran + amulet of power) - is this the problem?
Someone at the Sorcerers forum says
Spell Immunities are best protections against their rays, and Spellshield will protect against Beholder's anti-magic ray. Though I am not sure if they use it in un-modded game. My smarter beholders are really smart, they bite with their poisonous teeth if someone uses the Shield of Cheese, and beholders always target spell-casters with Anti-magic ray, which dispels everything and causes miscast effect
Spellshield is a level 9 spell...
Any bard-ways of doing it?

Scroll(s).

The two scrolls of Antimagic while being the ultimate are only available for two uses (cheese accepted).

Scrolls of the appropriate spell(s) - (e.g.) Spell Sheild are also available if limited. - Curdis !
The warlord sig of 's' - word

Making a reappearance for those who have a sig even longer

Antimagic are soo cheesy, I'd rather not use them.
I managed to finish the unseeing eye quest, using this strategy:

1/ Mislead! This is so essential.
2/ Spell Immunity: Necromancy to counter 'serious wounds'
2/ Have one lowly summon ready
3/ Beholders cast death spell: summon dies. You summon the powerful ones
4/ Death cloud (doesn't work very well since they move around a lot)
5/ While they are busy whacking your skele warrior, cast Minute Meteors + throw like crazy
Even the unseeing eye himself got killed pretty fast. Mislead is so cool

Spell Shield is a lvl 5 spell.
From the Spells Reference:
Spell Shield
This spell would be useful if the spells it protects were useful... unless you like cheese.

Cheese: Protects against beholder anti-magic rays without being canceled out.

Note that this spell does not only protect against conventional spell protection removal, but also against Breach. It will not protect against Dispel Magic or Remove Magic, which are more common.

This spell will absorb the first protection removal fired at you, even if not doing so would have no effect whatsoever.
More Cheese: Spell Shield protects against Dragons' Wing Buffets without being canceled out, too.
