Slow Eyegoucher Cave(spoiler)

Post by tristan0606 »

Im currently in the Eyegoucher Orc Cave and my computer is really starting to lag a lot. My specs are nVidia Geforce 7800 GS, 1.5Gb RAM, AMD Athlon XP 3000+ @2.17Ghz. I know it is recomended 3.0Ghz, but i truned down some of the graphics and such, and my game has never run slow until now. Someone mentioned that I have a fast CPU, but not enough for the latest games. Is this what he is talking about? And what do u suggest?

Don't worry about the 3GHZ part, that's garbage. I've got 2.4 and it runs everything fine. With a couple of exceptions (Oblivion comes to mind), CPU speed is a distant third to GPU and memory, imo.

Your system sounds alright, just a bit behind mine and I don't get any lag. Sorry to offer such a stock response but... are your drivers are up to date for your card?

Ya man, they are, so i really dont know what the problem is. Im looking for a CPU that will get about 2.8Ghz and that is a good CPU, and i also dont want to replace my motherboard. Do u have any ideas? I dont care about the price.

We might get moved to the tech boards, and probably should be.

Anyway. you're socket 939 I'm guessing if you're running an Athlon XP? I went AM2, socket 940, but went with a single core 3800 - works beautifully. I can't imagine there's a huge (if any) difference between the 3800 on 940 and 3800 on 939. I'd recommend it. Very easily overclocks from what I've read, even though I don't OC it, but by that route you could reach 2.8 Ghz no problem.

Before I'd do that though, dish out 80 or so bucks for an extra half gig of quality ram. It will make a difference, might fix the slowdown prob altogether.

I'm going to move it, but also leave a redirect, just in case somebody playing NWN2 with similar gear has had this difficulty.

Have you tried the other usual stuff, like defragmentation, disk cleanup, malware scan?
Your pc should be able to run NWN2 fine, so I don't think the problem is related to your system specs.

2.4GHz on a AM2 3800+ is not the same as 2.4GHz on a P4, nor is a AM2 3800+ the same as a 939 3800+.
IMHO the CPU and GPU are equally important, quickly followed by the RAM.

I do Scan Disk and then Disc Defragment twice a week. It is still running slow after i installed another half Gb of RAM. What do u mean by quality RAM? I am definitely getting the right type, but is there a certain..i dunno... company i should look for? And what is malware?

Is everything running slow, or just NWN2? If everything is, I'd try reinstalling Windows.

Quality RAM is RAM that's better than the cheap stuff (like Corsair and Kingston Valueram), e.g. G.Skill HZ (fully: G.Skill Extreme Series F1-4000USU2-2GBHZ, the stuff I got :) ). You need it if you're going to do overclocking. Otherwise, valueram is perfectly OK.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the CPUv.GPUv.Mem side of things. And if you check out some benchmark reviews for AM2 3800 and XP 3800 - there's honestly not that much difference. The Intel point is valid though, before Conroe came along Intel could just barely compete with AMD, and 2.4 Ghz on the older Intel meant squat.

As far as Quality memory is concerned, I'd even define the cheaper OCZ brands as 'Quality', and Corsair has always worked beautifully for me. Go to Anandtech.com for memory reviews, or ask for some more of what people on these boards use. And be sure it's compatible! If you don't know what to look for, bring your motherboard manual to the place you're buying from and ask the store attendee (NOT the store clerk at Best Buy... try a dedicated computer store).

I agree that your specs are fine for running the game. That cave shouldn't make you lag any more than the city. I have a pretty fast machine and I lag in the Blacklake district but nowhere else. It's annoying, but I attribute this to the devs of the game and not my machine since I have about such things from many others on the bioware boards.

Have you played past there with the same problem? So, is it just that one area or the rest of the game from that point?
