Spoilers
I have just discovered a way round the problem of not being able to play my favoutite characters in a multiplayer game. It was a comment from VonDondu that did it. She mentioned in passing that she copied games from the multiplayer version to the single player version. That got me thinking. If you start in multiplayer you can copy the saved game from mpsave to save. You can then say goodbye temporarily to your party. Go to the training room and pick up Deder and co as per usual. Return to your party and replace the characters that you do not want to keep with the ones that you have created and carry on. If you want you can copy this game back to multiplayer and use as per normal.
Alternatively, you can start the game in single player mode, get Deder and co to join you, leave as per usual and copy the game over to mpsave whenever you want and add your own characters at that stage.
I was surprised that this does not appear to cause any bugs.
For those wanting to have Deder and co in their party in a multiplayer game. SPOILERS

You can have any creature in the game join your party if you have the CLUA Console enabled.
Instructions contained here: CLUA Console
After this load up your game and press Ctrl Q while pointing at the relevant creature. This method can cause crashes to occur in BG1 though it seems to work fine in BG2 apart from crashes relating to creature items etc which are inevitable etc etc etc due to what you are doing.
This is also handy if you have been wondering about certain creatures abilities and just want to take a look at them.
Warning: creatures not playable won't work properly as normal party members as they cannot use certain items. Also for most of them the equiped item won't show properly in inventory as some don't have paperdolls or animations for using different weapons etc. Most standard player usable races should be okay though such as Deder and Co.

My favourite character in ToSC is Deder, found in the training room in Candlekeep. You get sent there by the gatewarden. He has some friends, Canderous, Arkanis etc. Their stats are exceedingly good Deder is in my opinion the best thief in the game. Only drawback is specialisation in missile weapons rather than bows. You have to use an exploit in order to keep them after training. The problem was that in the multiplayer version, you are not sent for training. However, by using one of the methods mentioned above you can keep them in the party and have your own characters as well. As well as getting the good characters, you also get to keep some good equipment for free which I like being a Yorkshireman. (Yorkshiremen are like the Scots only not quite so generous) The free stuff includes potion of speed, Wand of the Heavens, Wand of Magic Missiles, Plate armour, Small shield +1. At the beginning of the game that is very useful equpment. If you are playing Tutu, you cannot get them to stay with you unless somebody out there has found another exploit.VonDondu wrote:I don't think CTRL-Q works in BG1 (not unless you have Tutu, anyway).
wise grimwald, I'm afraid I don't understand what you're saying. Who are your favorite characters? And what is the problem you were trying to solve?

Do you know if you can use CLUA Console to keep them when they leave you in Tutu? I am planning on getting that mod, but was disapointed that I was prevented from keeping Deder and co.

Sorry, it was Barrador Kor who gave me the idea. I must have just read one of your posts and got mixed up.VonDondu wrote:I don't think CTRL-Q works in BG1 (not unless you have Tutu, anyway).

In Tutu and in BG2 you can use the Clua Console to retrieve any game npc (you just need to know the relevant creature code, usually their name). You can then use Ctrl-Q to get them to join you or talk to them if they have that dialog option.
Admittedly I haven't tested Ctrl-Q in BG1 though the IESDP does state that it is in there. I don't have BG1 installed at the moment otherwise I'd test and confirm myself.
