Emoticon Facelift?
Is anyone else noticing that our emoticons have suddenly adopted multiple colours? Or... is my computer malfunctioning again....

Nope, I see them as well, creepy looking as I thought green always meant "I feel sick" and not "I feel like touching something naughty"

lol! OK, good to see I'm not the only one
For a moment, given the psychedelic colours, I wondered if my computer has snuck off to do something illegal during my absence.

No, that would have to be Buck's computer which is worshipping its neural navel in the dead of the Fargo winter.dragon wench wrote:lol! OK, good to see I'm not the only one

Err, sorry about that. Earlier today, I realized that a handful of images in the /forums/ directory were never uploaded during the last upgrade, so I uploaded the missing images from the original vBulletin installation archive. Apparently my upload also overwrote most of our old smilie images.
I've replaced the colorful smilies with the originals again, but would be willing to leave some of the colorful ones if people really like them. The only problem is that they're really designed to be placed on a white background, so they don't look too good when used in our layout.
Contrary to popular belief, the smilie change had nothing to do with the subzero weather we're having in Fargo .

I kind of like them, Buck. Up to you, but I think we should keep these new, colorful ones. And it wouldn't be a bad idea if we could have more, either.

That's odd. I didn't encounter any different coloured smilies when I used Firefox and Internet Explorer just now. Only when I used Opera, then the smilies are of different colours. Weird.

I agree with this, they add a funky "groovy" feel to the place. The only one I don't care for is the green grin...even if the grin smilies used around here do often have some kind of sick connotation behind them...fable wrote:I kind of like them, Buck. I'm also not sure about the "cool" smilie, it seems a little indistinct, but I don't think it's entirely bad either.
The rest, IMO, look great! Indeed, if the board could handle it, a few more along these lines would be nifty.

Thanks, Buck. For a moment, I thought I was seeing things as I was able to see the coloured smilies when browsing the GB forums with Firefox.

At first, I didn't like the new ones at all.
Now I think they're OK, except for the "smilie" smilie (even if it's yellow, i don't think it's the same, it has weird eyes) and the "confused" smilie (it's much smaller than the others and doesn't express confusion well, maybe some questionmarks should appear above the head, like at the previous one, but at least in my PC they don't show).

There is indeed something above the "confused emoticon." I am just not sure what it is – possibly three black darts, but who would do such a thing to the poor little fellow?
Well, the new emoticons seem to cheer up the perhaps little bit colourless overall appearance of these forums and since these new emoticons seems to have gotten pretty popular around the net, why not? Wouldn’t it be an clear improvement? Yet, those good old yellow emoticons have this nostalgic feeling in them – I’ve been used to seeing them for a quite some time now, and I think it would be a pity if they kept on disappearing.
The poll is a good idea to find out what people think of this, and if there is going to be one, I guess I have some time to decide my side on this matter, which is kind of funny as I really don’t use emoticons. However, I don’t think that many would mind if there were some “extra” custom smilies to choose from for a month or two to find out which ones people like to use. Of course it creates some extra work on the staff’s side, but even when quickly browsing through the threads it is quite apparent which ones people like to use.
Well whatever the future holds, there seems to be another conspiracy at hold. A new topic in a form of a documentary, parodying the covering up of political scandals, at least I think it is a sketch that could work.

I would say there is question marks at the top of the confused -smilie. THose are just so small and it's hard to make the difference, especially when used here. As Buck said, some of them were meant to suit better on white background...
Nevertheless, I like these new smilies.

In Opera right now, on a black background, all I get is a much smaller blue, round "sad" icon for the confused one. I know the three question marks are supposed to be there, just as they were, before, but I can't see them any longer.Kipi wrote:I would say there is question marks at the top of the confused -smilie. Really like EEK, though.

Isn't is possible to have both the old and the new smilies around? In code you could make a difference like for the old smile smilie and for the new one.
Code: Select all
:)

If you follow the link Faberge provided, you can see the question marks more cleary.fable wrote:In Opera right now, on a black background, all I get is a much smaller blue, round "sad" icon for the confused one. Why would you want to do that for? I thought one smiling smiley should be enough. Why add another one?Malta Soron wrote:Isn't is possible to have both the old and the new smilies around? In code you could make a difference likefor the old smile smilie andCode: Select all

Presumably to give people a choice between the two different styles.DesR85 wrote:Why would you want to do that for? I thought one smiling smiley should be enough. Why add another one?
I generally prefer the new smilies, though I'm still not too sure about the green grin... it looks like a giant green pumpkin in need of dental work...
(love the sticking out tongue smilie though)

Well, yeah, but what's the point of having two smilies to serve one purpose? Wouldn't that be rather pointless?dragon wench wrote:Presumably to give people a choice between the two different styles.
After seeing the old ones for quite some time, I wouldn't mind a change in the smilies' looks. Something different for a change, if you ask me. As for that green grinning smiley, it looks like that smiley is sick (sickly colour).dragon wench wrote: I generally prefer the new smilies, though I'm still not too sure about the green grin... it looks like a giant green pumpkin in need of dental work...
