Ranged weapons useless in VTMB?
Ranged weapons useless in VTMB?
Is it just me or is ranged weapons useless in this game? I mean whenever i faced off bosses or enemies that charge and melee you up close all the time, i am unable to get off any shots using my guns. What do you guys think? Or is there a trick to using ranged weapons ig?
Well, you have to up the skill enough and use weapons that fit the right situation. Auspex will do wonders too. As will headshots. It also helps to use one of your powers to stun them before shooting. Blood purge for example will stun the crawlies in the sewers long enough for you to pick them off one by one.
I rarely use guns though, it makes the game too easy. I do tend to go with firearms when I first face off with the Sheriff, even if I haven't maxed the firearms/perception skill. He's just a bit to fast for me to melee.

Tricky makes good points. I can only add that I found celerity to be ridiculously effective with firearms, much more so than with melee weapons. If you can meet the skill requirement of the desert eagle or the steyr aug, and you have high-level celerity, you've basically got access to god mode.
What clan are you playing? Some sets of disciplines work better with ranged weapons than others.

*** Spoilers ***
Spoilers blacked out:
I don't find guns useless as such, but there are tricks in places. I've used guns successfully against the Plague Bearers, Andrei's creations, Zygaena, the Chang Brothers, Andrei himself (both in and out of warform), Ming Zhao (although recently I don't bother), and I can take the Sherriff in warform with the Glock - out of warform I use blades.
They don't work against the Werewolf, but nothing works against the Werewolf. Never tried them against the Gargoyle (I negotiate with it), and everywhere else they're essentially a convenience, or in some places a complete waste of time (I always play Tremere, so I have long range disciplines that are extremely handy). I only tried Romero's zombies with a gun once - thanks, but I'll just do the guy and buy the Jamie Sue later on.
The headrunners and serial killer I beat to death. Disciplines and the Glock against zombies, Pretty much everything else is disciplines, feeding, or blades, but I occasionally pull out the Anaconda in the Hollowbrook, and I use the flamethrower for parts of the gauntlet (specifically, the first and last part).
As Tricky pointed out, though, you gotta get skill. Get your ranged to 5 at least.

tremere need guns the least - I find that I don't use them anything like as much when you have the ranged blood disciplines of the tremere.
otherwise, guns are useful - the shotgun is useful in a wide rang of situations and that is followed by the Anaconda. by the end of the game, the desert eagle with its decent magazine is the most useful, or the killmatic (usually on single shot!) - HOWEVER using guns to the degree that you can, the game can feel more like the Matrix than Blade. for game-play, I prefer to use a mix of guns, disciplines and blades. Hollowbrook, for example, I switch about quite a lot - Crackhouse, not so much so. Ming's fortress - can go either way, depending on my sneakiness inclination.
with celerity 5 or auspex, fire-fights are 'interesting'.

I second Celacena's comments.
I think it's also realistic that using guns draws enemies because of the noise (this is especially annoying in the Temple and can screw up your mission for VV in the Sin Bin).
Secondly it is stated that at least vampires (but the same could be for other supernaturals) are less affected by guns as mortals (this mirrors the PnP game where for vampires damage by guns is considered as bashing damage rather than as lethal damage). So less effectiveness for guns is somewhere in character for the game. It isn't an FPS after all.
