any idea how I can get it to run?

Post by Noctilucus »

The game installs fine but when I try to play it, it returns immediately to desktop, no error messages or anything.

I exceed the system requirements (except video RAM: 32 MB instead of the required 64) and have an ATI graphics card which is supposed to be supported. Could this really prevent the game from starting at all? I would expect it to run at least through the intro or something...

Thanks in advance for any useful hints - other than to get myself another laptop

Are you using any patches? I use the 1.2 official patch and the 3.3 (the latest) unofficial one.

Thats all the help i can be im afraid as i spend way too much money on my PC to keep it all up to date (which for some reason always ends up being a pain in the ar*e to get to work!)!

And why do you think that the game would run with 32 MB less then the minimum required graphic card ? It's a pretty hardware intense game anyway, especially considering the memory lags.

What are your other system specifications anyway ?

1) Thanks, I'll give it a go with the official patch, and if that doesn't work with the 3.3 in addition...

2) I would just expect at least the intro to work, once I get to the settings I could try to tweak them a bit (that way I got the game's predecessor to run on half the required video RAM years ago). For the moment I don't have a choice, being abroad with only this laptop... Other specs: pentium M 2GHz, 512 MB RAM, 4.5 GB space left on the partition where I installed V-TM.

Your other specs seem fine (except free hard drive space, they recommend 4.7Gb, but that won't make a difference).

However, even though you got the previous game to work on half the graphics memory, this game requires full DirectX9 support which your (old?) graphics card probably doesnt have. That means the 3D accelerator could get an error causing it to not work.

To be safe on all new games my PC specs are Athlon64 2000+ (overclocked to 2200), 2Gb RAM, nVidia 7600GT 256Mb graphics card and 136Gb free on my games drive (500Gb overall).
