In whaling thread, I ran across something I considered to be an Appeal to Nature, and as I googled it making sure I've got the name right I stumbled onto a collection of fallacies. I find them fascinating because they pop-up so often in arguments, speeches and the like; they're the dirty tricks of proving you're right when you're not.
So, use a fallacy to prove your fallacy is the best.
My brother in law once used The Anecdotal Fallacy and he completely destroyed that other guy's argument. It's clear that this fallacy trumps any other fallacy.
There is zero evidence and it is impossible to prove that Appeal to Ignorance isn't the best fallacy. Therefore, it is the best fallacy
Oprah has publicly declared many times that Appeal to Misleading Authority is the best fallacy of them all. Do you think you're smarter than Oprah?
Here's a list of fallacies for quick reference.

You assume that people commonly use fallacious logic to prove their point on purpose; not out of ignorance, or sincere beliefs (however faulty they might seem to you), or misplaced priorities but with the malicious intention to mislead and full knowledge of the weapon used ("dirty tricks").Vicsun wrote:...I stumbled onto a collection of fallacies. I think you've just commited a few fallacies here.

Hush! You shouldn't let common sense or logic get in the way of a good thread. If you let that happen, you'll soon be trying to ruin great threads using not reasonable discourse, but senseless flaming which would undoubtedly lead to the downfall of this forum. It's quite the slippery slopeLady Dragonfly wrote:You assume that people commonly use fallacious logic to prove their point on purpose; not out of ignorance, or sincere beliefs (however faulty they might seem to you), or misplaced priorities but with the malicious intention to mislead and full knowledge of the weapon used ("dirty tricks").

edit: furthermore, I can't believe you'd want me to stop posting just because I misspoke and called fallacies 'dirty tricks'. Not only does everyone deserve a second chance, I also feel it's unfair for you to call for my ban for what I consider to be a minor transgression at best.
that was an attempted strawman

As everybody knows, the long-standing traditions are good because they are time-honored and because they are traditions. Tradition is a good thing, therefore senseless flaming is good.

Vicsun, you are not good at strawman business. You should learn from the older and more experienced Masters.Vicsun wrote: edit: furthermore, I can't believe you'd want me to stop posting just because I misspoke and called fallacies 'dirty tricks'. I am willing to give you a second chance, but please don't fail again.
Oh, and I hope you are a Red Apple, not a Drama Queen.

This thread is a waste of time. At a quick glance, I can find more than 40 threads here in SYM that have a similar, time-wasting character. The last thing SYM needs is another spamming thread.
(ad populum, plus a little ad ignoramtium; I tried to spice it up by using contrary wording)
Edit- HEY HEY HEY! Post number 1,000! That's pretty friggin' cool!
I'd like to thank Plato, Viscun, DW, Mag, Fable, and all the other symers without which this couldn't have been possible.
It is Oscar night, so I figured a speech was in order...
*band starts playing*
Wait, wait, I'm not done yet...

If we keep adding random threads to SYM, then eventually SYM will be nothing but randomness and we will lose the purpose to SYM perpetrating a worldwide catastrophe as GB sucks more and more souls into the endless abyss of randomness.
Man, now I know why I didn't do so well at Logic Class, that's a terrible example of a fallacy

Now if you people don't agree with Ad Bacculum being the best, I'll beat the living daylights out of this small furry mothball...
either that or you're all just too ignorant to realize that Ad Hominem is by far the most superior fallacy. Just look at the statistics...

We need a sticky thread like that. I insist. No, I demand. Otherwise, I want my account closed, my posts erased, my money back... wait, hell, I forgot there was no money, dammit... anyway, I will see you fascists in court. The last thing SYM needs is another spamming thread.
