dragon problems!

Post by climber »

I’m finding the two dragon fights in Act 3 absolutely impossible!

Two problems –

Other threads recommend spreading my party out. How? I can separate the leader from the rest by using the Stand Your Ground command, but as soon as I select a new leader they all bunch up again. I've got 'Far' selected in the Foolw bit of the Character sheet.

My three spellcasters each won’t cast more than one spell against a dragon. Once they’ve fired off the first one, I select another spell and a target [yes, I do get the ‘attack’ icon] but they just use whatever sling/bow/dart they happen to be equipped with. I don’t remember this happening against other enemies [but I don’t have an old saved game to check] – is it a dragon thing, or yet another bug? In the Character sheet I have Puppet Mode on for everybody. Shouldn’t this make the settings in the other sections irrelevant? I don't think that two tanks plus three one-off spells plus a few arrows is going to stop a dragon.

Are the dragon fights essential to the plot?

Move the Primary Character (Usually the one you create), after broadcasting stand your ground.

Pause the game. Select (control) a party member, and RE-Broadcast the Stand your ground command.

Unpause, then move the second character to the desired spot.

Repeat as necessary, remembering to re-broadcast the stand your ground command with each.

THis would work, as each time you select a new character, that one becomes the party leader, and everyone else follows them.

This doesn't work for me! I noted where the black dragons appear, then spread my party out around one of those spots, as suggested. When everyone was in position I paused, went back to my main tank, rebroadcast Stand Your Ground, then unpaused and attacked the heart. This triggered the cut scene, at the end of which everyone was again in a tight group and was flattened by the dragons in seconds [despite a lot of pre-positioning buffing up].

This, plus the only-being-able-to-cast-one-spell problem, is surely a bug? It makes the dragon fights impossible - will I still be able to finish the game if I just don't bother with them?

Another possibility is to try bashing the crystal heart and ignore the dragons.

I have heard that they disappear if the heart is destroyed.
It's better to be a live jackal than a dead lion, but it is better still to be a live lion (and normally easier as well).

You know, when I did this, I suppose you could say I did it the hard way. I used Sand. I filled all his available spell slots with Isaac's Lesser Missile Storm spells and Isaac's Greater Missile Storm spells, and nuked the hell out of the dragons. Of course I have him under ethereal visage and some other buffs and protection spells. It took me a few times to get the hang of it, but after about two or three tries, I managed to spank the little dragons

I think I may have some insight on your spell casting problem. If you are getting an attack icon and click, you will attack with a weapon and clear any spells you have already selected.

The tricky part is you don't always have to click on an enemy every time you cast a spell on them.

There is a little box that sometimes appears left of the list of actions your character is selected. That box usually has somebody's face in there. Could be yourslef, an ally, an enemy, or even a box or some other object. That box contains your TARGET. You can change your target by right clicking on something else for another target or empty ground to clear your target.

Spells. If you do not have a target, you can do the standard click the spell then click your target (even a spot on the ground sometimes). BUT if you have a target selected, when you click a spell it is automatically cast at your target as soon as your character is able, no more clicking involved.

So, what I think is going on is you click on a spell, click on a dragon. Fine, you cast a spell at the dragon which becomes your current target. Next you click on a spell, and it is set to cast at the dragon automatically. Then you click on the dragon (just like you did the first time) but since the spell is already aimed at the dragon, when you click you are telling your character to drop what he/she is doing and attack the dragon.

You may not have noticed this in other battles, because you dont really have to cast four fireballs at the same orc (cause he's dead). And when he dies he's no longer your target, so the click the spell click the target works fine.

As Darthelema said, ignore the dragons, go for the heart. Nuke it with a few Magic Missiles or have one of the tanks bash the heck out of it. The dragons draw their life force from the heart and when it's destroyed, they die automatically. Sure, it's a rather cheap way - I usually managed to kill both dragons in less than five seconds, with Qara and Sand firing at the heart - but eh, whatever works, works. :D

Yep. It was the ONLY way that worked for me. I tried and tried, over and over, using different strategies each time, to kill those black dragons, but made hardly a dent in their health.
Then I thought, "Let's see what happens if I just bash the heart and ignore the dragons until afterwards - at least I will have done what Nolaloth wanted..."
So, me and Khelgar 'bashed' the crystal heart and let the other team members do what they liked. The heart shattered, the black dragons died, and Nolaloth is pleased...

I was never sure if Nolaloth helped after the heart shattered, or if it was just shattering the heart that did it. Either way, it works like a dream...
