$1 missing!

Post by Sean The Owner »

its just some err...brain teaser? or something...ok, so anyways..

say...fable, wing and moonbiter are going to rent a hotel, they get seperate rooms, and for some reason its only $10 each for the night, so a total of $30 was paid.

then the manager of the hotel(buck satan?) sees fable and remembers how good of a student fable was, and asks the person who brings your stuff to the room(gruntboy?) how much they were charged, he says $10 each, like everyone else. then buck satan gives grunt boy a five dollar bill and says to give it back to the 3 guys.

gruntboy sucks at math, so he asks the cashier(DW) how to split it between 3 people. DW gives him 5 loonies(loonies are $1) and says to give each of them back a loonie.

gruntboy asks DW about the other 2 loonies, and she says you keep 1, and i keep one.

so, gruntboy gives them back a loonie each.

fable, wing and moonbiter paid $9 each, gruntboy has $1 and DW has $1

9X3+1+1=29

where'd the last dollar go?

i dont know the answer...if there is one, class was over, and it was a supply teacher, so we didnt find out...and its not the government screwing you out of more tax money either

They paid $30. Buck took $5 to give back to them so the amount paid is $30-$5=$25. But Gruntboy and DW both took $1 so the total paid is $27.

$27 plus the $3 they got back is $30 so no money went missing :)

I'm still puzzled as to why its missing if you work it out the way you did though lol.

Edit: All I can think is that its the wrong sum you are doing. The total cost should be $25 not $30 cos that is what Buck charged. So it should be $9x3 - $1 - $1 = $25 because effectively DW and Gruntboy 'stole' the $2 so its deducted not added.

There is no puzzle at all, the answer is in your first sentence. Sean added $2 instead of $3.
fable, wing and moonbiter paid $9 each, gruntboy has $1 and DW has $1

9X3+1+1=29

where'd the last dollar go?
Dude, it is (9x3)+1+1+1=30, unless you think fable does not deserve his discount. ;)

The other $2 should have been divided between three guests ($2:3=66 cents for each of them; plus 2 cents to throw into the wishing well), so they ended up paying more than buck satan intended ($9 instead of $8.34). The two loonies were basically stolen by DW and Gruntboy from them. :D

it would not be 9X3+1+1+1 you would add 1 only twice because gruntboy and DW are the 2 i added, the 9X3 is for fable, wing and moonbiter

Where's the money? It's simple.

After receiving $30 for the hotel room and issuing a $5 discount, Buck Satan has $25.

After keeping part of the refund, Gruntboy has $1.

DW has $1.

After receiving a refund, Fable has $1.

Wing has $1.

Moonbiter has $1.

There's your $30.

3 x $10 = 30 paid to Buck
$30 - $5 = $25 kept by Buck
$25 + $1 + $1 + $1 + $1 + $1 = $30

Here's another way to look at it. Fable, Wing, and Moonbiter each have $9 less than they started with. Buck has $25 more than he started with. Gruntboy and DW each have $1 more than they started with. Here's how you balance the equation. On one side of the equation you have $27, and on the other side of the equation you have $25 + $1 + $1. Money spent = money received. It zeros out.

Fable, Wing, and Moonbiter paid $27 for their room, represented by $10 x 3 - $5 or $9 x 3 if you prefer. Under no circumstances does 9x3+1+1 represent what they paid.

Of that $27, Buck has $25 of it and Gruntboy and DW have $2 of it:
$27 (Fable, Wing, and Moonbiter) = $25 (Buck) + $1 (Gruntboy) + $1 (DW)

No, here's the key. Fable, Wing, and Moonbiter LOST $9 each, and Gruntboy and DW GAINED $1 each. So you either you need to use a minus sign instead of a plus sign or put them on opposite sides of the equation. And don't forget Buck, who GAINED $25, which is also part of the equation. Does that make it any easier to figure it out?
9 x 3 = 25 + 1 + 1
or
9 x 3 - 25 - 1 - 1 = 0

Sean The Owner wrote:it would not be 9X3+1+1+1 you would add 1 only twice because gruntboy and DW are the 2 i added, the 9X3 is for fable, wing and moonbiter
You're supposed to subtract 1 twice from 9x3, not add 1 twice. The result (25) equals the amount of money that Buck kept. In other words, Fable, Wing and Gruntboy paid $27 for the room and Buck got $25 of it and Gruntboy got $1 and DW got $1. Sorry to be so repetitive, but that obviously needs to be clarified. 9X3+1+1+1 and 9X3+1+1 have no connection to reality, and that's the problem.
