Who are you?

Post by Avane »

We get born and our parents get to choose our names. But when you join a website like GB then you can become someone/anyone. So why did you choose to become who you are on this site?
What, if anything, does your name mean to you? I have come across lots of names: Kipi, Lazigori, Moonbiter, Dragon Wench, DesR85, Xraygord, Mr_Sir, Buck Satan plus lots more. Some of these names are really curious...want to deconstruct. Understand that some names will be aligned to games [found someone on another site called 'Mentat' - drug in in Fallout series]. So started to think.
I wanted to be Athena on GB, godess of war and wisdom, but the name, not surprisingly was taken. Great name, great pedigree...So what does your name mean to you?
Avane is a name I like, it has that edgy RPG feel to it. Avane is my name for Icewind Dale and NWN. When I play any of the Baldur's Gate scenarios then I am Athena. When I play games of a more post-modern era I am Trinity. When I am a man, I am Troy. I think Planescape:Torment was so attractive because you had to be TNO. However, I do like to be myself or one of myselves...Do you have alter egos?

Hmmm... I think SYM would be better place for this...

But to answer to your question, my nickname comes from the time when I still played basketball. Kipi was the nickname our coach called me, so I kinda sticked with it when choosing my screen names in different places... it's actually 90% possibility that if you happen to meet person called Kipi in diffferent forums, that's me, as I tend to use it a lot.

One of the kids in my tutor group in the first school I worked in used to call me "Mr Sir" and it just reminds me of how much I loved teaching the kids at that school and how sweet they all were (it was a boarding school that specialised in children with learning difficulties and behavioural difficulties but it also had a lot of army kids and she was one of them and used to help me teach the younger children who had various problems). I use it because it has so many fond memories and memories that I will always look back on and just smile :)

My name comes from a minor character in my fave book series "Chronicles of The Black Company." I was re-reading the original trilogy at the time when I first started using message boards, and it was the first that came to mind and that suited me best.

When it comes to making up names, I'm not very good at it because hardly anything ever sounds right to me. I don't like names that mean something or names that are already taken; I'd rather use a meaningless name that has never been used before.

My real name is Vonda. Naturally, people have given me nicknames--usually Von (which is okay) or Vonnie (which I don't like all that much). "Von Don Doo" is a baby-talk name my boyfriend made up. It has a nice ring to it, so I use it when I play RPGs and when I sign up on message boards. I'm not sure how it should be spelled, so I tried to pick a form that looked the best and confused other people the least. (If I don't capitalize the first D, a lot of people end up calling me things like "Voodu".)

Well, I'm actually in the same boat as VonDondu here. I'm also not very good at making up names, to be honest. The 'Des' part come from the first part of my real name. As for the 'R', it is short form of 'Red'. I got it from a character in Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 by the name of Cpl. Joe "Red" Hartsock. Don't know why I chose this soldier's nick but I felt at home with it, oddly enough. The number '85' correspond to the year I was born. ;)
''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price

Cuchulain is an Irish folkhero, sort of like the Irish Beowulf. he is the main character in one of Ireland's great sagas, the Ulster cycle. Although not Irish myself, I am an American of Irish heritage. When I was 14 and needed an AOL name, I thought that Cuchulain was the coolest thing ever. I was born in 1982, hence the... Cuchulain82. Currently I use it because it is easier to maintain one name than remember a whole bunch of different names for various sites.

(FYI- To anyone picking a new e-mail address, I advise you to choose something that is easier to explain to your friends when they ask you about your e-mail address :D )

I used to be one of those sad little Anime fans who thought they knew a thing or two about Japanese culture. The suffix -chan is something fond, or implying of youth, I believe. I was also into competitive swimming at the time, and thus the two were brought together. :)

Also, yours truly is, in fact, female. :D

I honestly cannot remember...

I do know, though, that I rather think it sucks and is all together unimaginative.

You mean that kind of sad? ;)

Anime/manga style is cute as long as I'm not seeing it everywhere. Like what's happening to Marvel Comics right now. God, I really wish they would stop ruining all their comics.

I would assume that you are talking about Arnis.

I had a few basics of that when I was a kid but I haven't been practicing for the longest time. Not really a martial artist but I think I'm a master of "sayonatsi". Sayonatsi is short for "SA iYO NA TSInelas ko!" that means "You can have my slippers." as in, throwing slippers to hit enemy's face then run like hell! :D

Ahem, lest I be accused of spamming this thread... :p

Added info on my username: Being a Filipino expat in Thailand at the time I joined GB, I was hoping that Filipinos in this forum would recognize me as one so we can exchange ideas under an international setting (as opposed to discussing in the comforts of the Filipino context --- I might as well just join a Filipino forum for that. ;) )

I know I've answered this question before here, but... ;)

There's really no interesting story behind my GB handle. I quite literally sat looking at my computer screen during registration, and it was the first one I thought of that appealed :D
