3d Acceleration?

Post by Tricky »

I'm not sure if this was possible in BG1 (I installed BGTutu and deleted the old folder shortly after obtaining the BG2 disks), but I seem to be able to have the option to enable 3d acceleration since BG2. That just turns a larger portion of the screen black though. Might be the out of date OpenGL driver that's causing that, I'm not sure. I'd have to dig around a bit.

Does anyone have a clue if looking to make this 3d acceleration option work is worth the trouble? I mean.. this isn't a 3d game we're talking about. My computer is already quite a bit faster than those from back when BG was released, so I'm not sure if anything can go any faster or look prettier than it does now. I was looking for related 3d accelerated screenshots, but I couldn't find any that looked different. I guess this was largely unsupported at the time of release?

Oh, DW pointed out that better graphics aren't really the point of the Baldur's Gate games. I agree with her, which is why I'm not going to try to make it work unless there would be a noticeable difference.

When I tried it I found it made the game run really slow and the mouse cursor kept sticking. So from my point of view, 3D acceleration is pointless for this game. From what I could tell, there was no significant change in graphics or animation, and definately not enough to make it worthwhile.
