1) why was sideous so intent on taking the naboo system?
2) How come Owen Lars did not recognize 3P0 in episode IV? Obviously if he had worked with him for so long he wouldve remembered at least the name?

1) He intended to throw the council into disarray so the old chancellor would be demoted, aka 'the vote of no confidence'. The conflict on Naboo was a means, not an end.
2) While George may be a delightful little storyteller, he has absolutely not a good director. There have been worse plot violations in his movies than this one.
