any ideas

You get the key to open the door that leads to the missing kid.

Because you get it before you ever try to open the door, you might not ever notice you needed it.

I also didn't know of the Hexagon key's purpose until Balphezar mentioned it. Thanks for clarifying this. :)

You can open the door without the key, they probably just forgot to make the door start as locked. If not, it could still have another use.

Hexagon Key

The hexagon key is at the "Rose Cottage" nearby the hobbe cave. You should go there first, before you enter the cave. If you don't, the bandit will leave so you can't sacrifice him instead of the kid. Not that you have to, you can just kill the imp with the bandit's help.

Either way, just talk to the old lady in the rose cottage (that's the kid's grandmother) and she'll give it to you.
