Post by Night_Heaven »

Hello. I see that this is a very active forum and i want to see what you think about my beautification npc portraits. Is the first thing I am doing for Baldur's Gate 2 and I have worked hardly to make this portraits. For those of you that grow tired of the bored look of some npc-s or maybe you want a little extra colour to spice up things.Any critics or such will hlp me make things more good. :)

MOD WILL BE LAUNCHED SOON!!!!

I really like the first Viconia one and the first Aerie one :) Are you going to post the link to download them in portrait image sizes once you are finished (possibly as a bundle of them all in a .zip file)?

Those are very nice portraits. I especially like Lavender Aerie and Blue-Eyed Jaheira. Also, it's amazing how a color shift can make Nalia look less like Drew Barrymore and more like Michelle Pfeiffer.

However, you might want to think of a different name for your collection. There is another portrait collection called Nightmare's NPC Beautification, and it would be a shame if someone passed up yours because they had heard the name and thought they had already seen them before.

Very nicely done, indeed. Most people work on putting up new portraits, or retouching portraits from reallife figures. (I believe Viconia is, in fact, a touched up realllife portrait. We had a thread about that, some while ago.) But I can find very few that recolorize existing portraits, especially with such a nice sense of color, too. :)

Changing colours in portraits in fine, because some of them have horrible colour choice, especially backgrounds for Korgan and Edwin, with some sort of milky-pink-blue... ugh. They just don't go well with those guys. So is Vic's yellow cloak (maybe it's disguise? no dark elf would wear yellow  )

But, I'd say some of theese portraits need other retouch, not only coloristic one. When I get my laptop back (and still working ;P ) with photoshop, I will try to make you see what I mean.

Oh, and I'd say most of bg1 portraits were remade photos of real people. That's why the ones in 2 seem so queer. You can see they're not real, like pictures in a comic book.

I plan to start another run-through of BG2 after finishing up BG1. How would one go about shrinking those excellent jpegs for use in the game?

Very nice work!
I especially like the portraits of Aerie and Nalia. Both girls seem to have much more character in the images you created.
To my (personal) tastes, there is a bit too much makeup on Jaheira and Viconia, or maybe something about the colours is just jarring for me. But as I said, your artistry is very beautifully done, and this sort of thing is always subjective. :)

Hmm.. don't know if I have right to post those here... but I did recover my laptop and I'd like to show you what I did.

I wonder if it is jut me thinking that Jaheira's portrait is just badly made... All the alxles of her face were just wrong. So i did some correcting. I can't get the images to be hosted anywhere, don't know why, so I'll attach them here.

mod on the way

QuenGalad, you're right about Jaheira's "angles", and I think you were more or less successful in "fixing" the position of her mouth. However, if I may make a suggestion, I think the biggest problem with her original portrait is the location and size of her left eye, which is too close to her left ear and too far away from her nose. (Her right cheek is also rotated too close to the plane of view, to use a term from linear perspective). As a perspective drawing, it's a mess. The left side of her head is larger than the right side of her head even before the camera angle distorts it with the "fish-eye" effect. I would try moving her left eye a little closer to her nose (and re-positioning her left iris to keep her from looking cross-eyed) and trimming away some of her left jaw. If you do that, you would also have to rotate the left corner of her mouth in an upward direction, and maybe stretch it a little to make her smile a little wider. It's hard to say, though, without seeing how the changes would actually look.

@VonDondu, I'm astonished someone noticed all those things too :) I thought it was only me and my in-born plastical criticism...

Yes, I agree with all you said. However, I thought I managed to fix her cross-eyed look... snif... ;) Some things can, and will, still be fixed, but for others I just don't have the time. Still, I hope she looks better? Just a little bit better?
