It depends really. Whenever I create a character in an rpg I always have an image in my mind of how I want them to be and how I will play them. Sometimes I play Morrowind as a noble Paladin who was imprisoned by a corrupt judge for doing the right thing and rescuing someone or standing up for justice, so she (I always play female characters in rpgs if I can, I just prefer it) explores Morrowind trying to hunt down evil, slavers and so on and does not steal at all and helps all in need. Another time I chose to roleplay as a chaotic and very evil necromancer who was only helping the blades so he could stay out of freedom and was enticed by the power he might get. I've also played as a druid who is out to protect nature and balance as much as possible, a thief who is good at heart but will steal anything in sight, and a noble and powerful sorceress who uses her skills to aid others. My next play through I am considering trying a cleric, not sure if good or evil yet though.

(Oh and in case you are wondering, I never finish all quests, expansions etc. with these characters - I have an addiction to creating new characters and re-starting lmao so half the time they don't even finish the main quest, they just explore a lot)

She's a dark elf, who doesn't really believe in the Neverine,yet,... she's just a level six and has freed some slaves she's found in a cave, belong only to the Blades at this point, doesn't really know what house or guild yet....
previous characters have been a Khajit thief, he lasted the main quest.
A Bosmer Assassin, she was hell on wheels in the Assassins guild, :) advanced as far as possible, and had this incredible urge to collect candles and lights and books, filled up her Hiallu stronghold with "too much" booty...LOL and just explored every inch of the map as possible...she tended to get distracted from all her quest...
Still playing with the Dark elf, but don't really have a full backstory for her, but this will be flesh out by the time I get her to level 10, usually though my characters have a full backstory in mind at the start.

My char. is a dark Elf who is really trying to lose his status of outlander. He was born on the main land but because he lost his parents and nobody else wanted him he never got love and never returned it. He believes that magic is the greatest of all skills and joins House Telvanni. He takes great pride in being a dark elf and wants to show the rest of Tamriel this. He is now a wizard and wants to be Leader of Telvanni to change the Telvanni way. He however also hates the other houses, because they didn't want the dark elf in their house. Aside from that he has a problem with revenge. He wants to kill the imperials who imprisoned him for what he tought was right.

I play a female character, but I make her really strong, invincible, the way that women can't be in real life. She is of course gorgeous (Imperial) and charismatic (think important) and really smart. I also push up her stats on stealing and stealth, because I like to steal; something for nothing, can't be bad. Also she is a really good person, and freeing slaves is a very personal thing with her. Because before she was freed from wrongful imprisonment, that was how she felt too, trapped by the wrong doings of an unjust and corrupt society. I also like her to look nice, so I wear the nicest gear possible (that dwarven stuff is ugly), would use that green glass stuff, but it is rubbish when it comes to safety!

The glass armour definitely isn't rubbish, just about the best light armour in the game, unless of course you have no skill in light armour, which is easily remedied.

I was struck by the self-contradiction in your post: I like to steal..... she's a really good person! No wonder she got locked up, most thieves do when they get caught.

I caught that little contradiction myself, but couldn't resist it. Does seem weird though that grave-robbing, plundering dead bodies and stealing are all okay in the gaming world!!

I guess i's left up to the player how they wish to roleplay, but I agree it is a bit strange, but heck, who are we to judge alien cultures.

The one exception, in many games, is stealing, like in the real world, it's only OK if you don't get caught. In Morrowind you can gt a price on your head real easy just for trying to sleep in the wrong bed, or inadvertently 'clicking' on someone whilst in stealth mode, even if you don't try to steal anything!

Yep, hands up, you are sticking with Xeroth's post and being helpful. I too am being helpful really; but back to my thieving ways. I always join thieves guild first because they are so forgiving and reduce those nasty fines that you mentioned (and I will not mention, because I don't want to inadvertantly wander into the minefield of spoilers). So go see Sugar in Balmora Xeroth.

my first character is a dark elf knight whos and orphan, and hes both kinda good and bad. his name is Malus (hence my account name or whatever) and hes kinda both good and evil. hes a werewolf but hes a good werewolf cuz he will only eat bandits.
my second character is a kajhiit whos a thief. she is at the head of the thieves guild and house halaalu and is slowly working her way up the ranks of the morag tong. she really is a good person though cuz she frees as many slaves as she can.
my thirk character is new and shes a high elf whos a powerful sorceress. im not sure if shes good or evil.

I'm on pc and I've installed many mods, including a lot of clothing mods. Right now I'm playing an Ayleid clothier who isn't really interested in doing most quests, but needs a lot of money to buy and trade in expensive clothes. So far she's raided the vaults of the three Great Houses. Right now she's getting ready to empty some chests in Mournhold. After that, she'll be seen around Bloomingdales.
She says: Lou, it's the Beginning of a Great Adventure

Love it....my daughter started a game, and quit most quests just to visit the various clothing mods I've got installed. :D

Thought it was time to type up another character background story.

Ashantira was born to a Bosmer mother and a Dunmer father. Her father was a merchant turned adventurer who ended up travelling into Valenwood where he became thoroughly besotted by a Bosmeri archer/thief.
After a few years, they had a daughter...

When Ashantira was a baby (no idea what that would be in elven years :D ), her parents decided to take a trip together and left her in the care of a relative...
While seeking shelter in a cavern during a storm they were set upon by Imperial bandits... Her father survived the encounter long enough to be able to return Valenwood and as healers attempted to stem the flow of blood he managed to explain what had happened. He died shortly thereafter.

Ashantira, once she was old enough to hear what had happened to her parents (whom she has no memories of) started to harbour a dislike for Imperials, even though she knew at a rational level that bandits are the same everywhere.

As she matured into a young woman, she mastered the arts of stealth that all Bosmeri have a natural gift for. However, she had also inherited an interest in magic from her father, and studied it as much as the wild setting of her home could permit. Ultimately, however, she needed to leave in order to hone her growing abilities in the schools of Illusion, Alteration and Mysticism, and, she travelled far and wide, eventually ending up, ironically, in Cyrodiil.
She discovered that elves (especially those of mixed blood) in the Imperial province were frequently viewed as second-class citizens, and it was difficult to make ends meet... Thus, Ashantira began to draw upon her thieving abilities in order to survive.
A traitorous "ally," jealous of her rapid advancement in the local thieve's guild decided to end her career by selling her name to a corrupt Imperial magistrate....
And that is how she ended up in Vvardenfell....

Currently:
level 30
Archmagister of Telvanni
Archmage of the Mage's Guild (it's about knowing the enemy)
Master Thief
Hortator and Nevarine (yet to confront the final boss)

Character update

Jocasta: Dark Elf Assassin, Level 29
Main Quest..Blades...ready to visit the Cavern of the Incarnate
Morag Tong (ready for special writs)
She has small house (Abu's Retreat) filled with treasure found in her adventures. Likes candles and lanterns in and around the house.
Bookcases filled. :D
At this point in her life, she is questioning her destiny, to fill her time she is trying to explore this strange land into which she has been brought into.
Slavery is a issue that she doesn't agree with, what with having spent some time there herself. She has vowed to free as many slaves as possible. She doesn't believe she will join any of the great houses, as many seem to look the other way on the slavery issue. Visited many different clothiers and armor outfitters, but prefers the glass armor she acquired in Ghostgate. :D
