Mentor's Ring

Post by joe05 »

I found Mentor's Ring.
I checked the database here and it along with a robe seem to be quite helpful for me(Breton-Mage-Apprentice).
But, I'm not sure exactly how it helps ?
It fortifies INTL/WILL, but my attributes stay "as is" ... I was hoping it would increase them 10pts
How does this ring benefit my character?

Right now I don't need the money... definately don't want to sell it if it will help my character

Thanks !

The ring should add 10 points to both willpower and intelligence, however if you have your int or will drained then you need to unequip the ring before restoring them then equip the ring again in order to get the benefits. This is the same with any item that fortifies attibutes when you have that attribute level drained by a spell or a monster.

By adding 10 to int, you will get 10 more mana, or even more if you have a higher mana multiplier. It will also help with skills such as alchemy and so on. Increased willpower will help you with skills such as destruction and conjuration etc.

... thanks Mr_Sir

I thought all I had to do was equip the ring.
Seems you have to r-click the ring once equipped to receive the enhancements ... found this out by accident :-)
I heard a noise and some yellow stuff floated in front of me = being so smart/savvy(LOL) I checked my character screen ... now my INTL/WILL are up 10pts

When I was pm-ing Galraen, he also noted the problem of "if a attribute gets drained".
I've been keeping a note on my base number and unequipping the amulet in case I got drained.

Time to buy some attribute increasing potions !

Hey Joe.....been through some of the same before......especially since I started playing on xbox then bought the pc version....had trouble with first off either attacking or using magic on npc's I just wanted to talk to...then took me forever to figure out how to use the repair tongs and hammers...

and guess what...am still finding through this forum, hints and ideas and different ways of doing things.....another thread had a very simple idea for marking your frequent paths with lanterns and candles...going to have to try that one myself. :)

That's not right Joe, all you should have to do is equip the ring, there should be no need to do anything else. That and some of the things that you mentioned in your PMs lead me to suspect that there's something wrong with your installation.

What version are you running? To find out start the game, when you get to the load/new/options screen the version number should be in the lower left corner.

Galrean - hi.
I'm playing the PC GOTY edition.
I'm patched to 1.618 ... close to that number (?)
The manual/addendum said to install Bloodmoon last and I would be using the latest patch. All games will be patched to the latest patch.

The mod/plugin problem has actually been helpful !
I noticed leveling up mistakes; poor gameplay tactics and your mention of Mentor's Ring helped too.
I remembered a guard say; "some fool lost the ring in a tomb" ... pays to listen to the game script and read between the lines here(... more on that later = Amulet of Shadows posts) ... so I knew it was an "beginning game item"
Found the ring.

Then when Ampasand/MageLord/BlueSky posted about the amulet, I "thought"
it sounded like an "early game item" ... thanks guys
So, I checked where I haven't been.
Found the amulet.
All I'll say, as to not give anything away, is, "I don't like this whole area" :-)
Made me change my tactics; again.
I'm reverting back to my FPS sniper game tactics ... 1) observe 2) use maximum range 3) be in a good position/ enemy in a bad position 4) have an exit/retreat strategy(...yes, I have backed off cliffs; into trees, boulders and stone walls)
This area made me very cautious/skittish ... like when I hear the music and look up for Cliff Racers :-)

Also noted, a few fish/rat/forager nibbles helps my Unarmored rating.
Plus, I can tell who's Blighted.

So, starting over has helped me ... your Absorb Health spell has been a lifesaver
I can now use both Destruction/Mysticism in a fight ... level them both

On the amulet ... observation saved me from suicide ... but I could have made it realatively easy had I "thought the whole scene through"
Of course I didn't and almost died.

Now I'm bummed ... I found a guy dead in a boat with lots of goodies on him and in containers ... couldn't carry anymore so I left him ... now I can't find him :-(
You know: " the guy clawed to death" ... I'm sure a surprise will be waiting for me, if I can find him ... must be somewhere in "amulet area" ... going to search for him

Need the money. The END skills are getting expensive ... I'm still able to buy 10 levels to get 5 END ... but, I need to replenish my $ for further level ups

Also need to go spell searching ... MageLord mention some " magic weakness spells" ... for those nasty resitant enemies ... not sure what they are or how to combine them with a Destruction spell(... noted in another post/thread)

Anyways, things are better.
I've had no other problems with the game ... a few crash to desktops ... can be expected when you play 6hrs and are "running" through doors
I'm looking at my GOTY addendum ... I installed them in the correct order
No idea why I have to r-click.

You're doing well for just beginning this game, cannot tell you how many times I've backed off cliffs trying to get a clear shot with arrows or to cast a spell.
Haven't tried it yet, but the idea of marking paths with lanterns or candles might be a possibility for marking spots to come back to...I tend to get distracted from my quest when I find a new tomb/cave, I go in and loot then forget where I was or where I was headed....LOL:laugh: Attention deficit I think...
as for the game crash, yes after doing all nighters, have come to think the game just needs to rest.... ;)
Have stood and let mudcrabs just beat up on me to up my block skills before...
and am guilty of finding a good spot and putting a heavy object on the keyboard to up my sneak skills while I go to the fridge or take a break....
Yeah I know kinda cheesy.... :)

Lol, I do that when levitating long distances - equip an invisibility ring and just put something on the keyboard and come back a few mins later :D

You should try a multi mark mod. That way you can come back to areas with some good loot. I did that when I killed the gang outside Tel Branora.

Ooooh shiny ones.....multi-mark....oh no, another mod to try....
Haven't run into that one, will be doing search for it tonight and giving it a try.
Always thought just able to mark one spot was rather limited..
