Weapon Speed

Post by DEMONIO GUERO »

In IWD 1 Weapons had a speed factor listed.

IWD2 says nothing about it.

Are we to assume that all weapons attack at the same speed? What, then, is the point of daggers, short swords, etc? Should I just pick the weapon with the greatest damage that my char is proficient in? Or do the weapons in fact have different speeds and they just arent listed?

Correct me if I'm wrong but IWD 2 uses AD&D 3rd edition rules. Meaning there is no weapon speed, who hits first depends on your initiative score.
Sage plays a paladin,
because other classes would be frowned upon for laying their hands on a wounded companion

In IWD1 weapon speed was also used to calculate number of hits you were able to do (IIRC

And as far as I know it isn't calculated same way in 3rd edition.
(yes, IWD uses 3rd edition rules.)

So attack speed has nothing at all to do with the weapon?

(Sorry, DnD newbie.)

Supposedly, but I'm not so sure. It seems to me (observation evidence only) that characters with small blades or fists do hit earlier in a round than warriors with huge halberds. If so, it's hidden in the game mechanics.

Whatever you do, do not take the Improved Initiative feat. It's "broken" and has no effect at all other than being a total waste of a feat.

The point of daggers and short swords ("small blade" feat) is that you can use the feat Weapon Finesse for low-to-medium Str characters. There's also some darn good weapons out there using this proficiency, such as the Brilliant Short Sword +5. In general though, high Str characters should use two-handed weapons for the damage bonus.

Thanks for the help guys.

Im going to play for a bit longer (new to the game) and see if I notice a big difference between large weapons and daggers / short swords.

I just started a new party so I won't have any problem re-creating. And if it seems to me like weapons make no real difference, I'll simply use the highest possible damage weapon for each char.
