Baldur's Gate vs Neverwinter Nights

Post by Tark Vomar »

I am a big fan of Baldur's Gate and have played them all several times. I especially like the part where I can create and control all of my characters. I would go into multi-player mode and create my own personal group. That to me is what made the game so much fun to play. Now I know I am a little out dated here but I just recently picked up the Neverwinter Nights Diamond edition and after playing it for awhile I must say that I am disapointed in the way the game is played. For example I can't create my own group like I could in BG. And the control of my (Henchmen) is limited. I can't adjust there skills or change there weapons or armor. Is this the way the game is run or am I missing something. I tried going into multi-player mode and create my own group but aparently I can not import them into one game. Is there any thing I can do to change this or am I stuck with just one character? And are there any other games out there that resemble Baldur's Gate in the way that it is played? Thanks for any advice. CPC

Neverwinter Nights is not like Baldur's Gate in many aspect, other then game world/setting.

So no, you can't create a group of people, for that to work, you'll have to actually be playing a multi player game (setting it up and having other people connect to the game).
Thus the group aspect of BG is not present in NwN.

As for other games similar to BG/BG2 then that is perhaps better left in another thread, for another forum - but you might want to look up Icewind Dale series and Temple of Elemental Evil. Both are somewhat aged though which might put off some people.
Also - Neverwinter Nights 2 has more group dynamic and a larger party size, still no where near Baldur's Gate but it is a huge step from the original NwN, so that might be worth to look at for you. They are though still companions/henchmen and as such micromanagement of them is more difficult then BG/BG2.

And in the expansion Hordes of the Underdark you can have more then one henchman, but it is still similar to the original campaign NwN, just one more :)

Country Bumkin

Well many thanks for the reply and info. As far as going on-line and joining a multi-player game.......well I got the o'le phone line for my internet. And we all know how much fun that is to try and game on. Forget it. So I mostly just go solo. Thats why Baldur's Gate was perfect for me.
Once again Thanks and I will check out the info you gave me. CPC

I think "Temple Of Elemental Evil" Is a little like that, isnt it?
I didnt manage to play much, as it crashed continuously.
[I did find a solution for this on these forums, thanks to the people involved! :D ]
I believe its got a similar sort of party formation as BG, but with the sort of graphics and effects of NWN.

Although its been a LONG time, and i could be totally wrong!

You may also try "Pool of Radiance". I played the "Ruins of Myth Drannor" game and I am almost positive you can create all your own characters. You also control all the players...even the ones you pick-up during the campaign. It is however also rather dated but is also available very cheap...I paid $9.95 at Wal-Mart. It plays a little more like true D&D and a little less hack'em up. Battles take alot longer...especially the large ones.
Success takes commitment. In a bacon and eggs breakfast the chicken is involved but the pig is committed...be the pig!!!
