leveling question

Post by Skiboarder »

I am confused by the leveling system OBlivion uses. When you level, you are given a chance to increase 3 of your major skills. You can also get bonuses if yo u have used those skills enough. Im confused about that. Is there really a point to bonuses besides reaching 100 faster?

another question
How can one get more Magicka. The amount of Magicka is x2 the skill number of intelligence (i.e. Intelligence:70, Magicka: 140). However there are spells that require magicka waaayyyy above 200. How can you get that much magicka?

1- Nope, no other benefit.

2- IIRC, Magicka goes up every level as well, or so I thought. Otherwise, increase your Intelligence and get a bunch of magic items.

Also, the amount of magicka it takes to cast any given spell will go down as your score in the related skill goes up (e.g. a fireball spell that costs a ton of magicka when your Destruction skill is 25 will cost a lot less if you get your Destruction up to 75 or 100).
Can the answer to this question be "No"?

Regarding the amount of Magicka you get:

It depends on Intelligence, Racial bonus (if any), and Birthsign.

The top basic INTelligence at char creation is 50.
The two best races with high INT are Breton and High Elf.

Bretons have a racial bonus of 50 to Magicka.
High Elves have a racial bonus of 100 added to their magicka - but they also have 25 points weakness to all 3 elelmental magic types.

The Mage birthsign adds another 50 to magicka.
Or:
The Apprentice birthsign adds another150 to magicka - but you also get 100% WEAKNESS to all magic types.

So:

Imagine you have a High Elf, with the Apprentice birthsign; in addition to the magicka you get for your INT, you will get an additional 250 magicka (racial plus birthsign). Plus those HUGE weaknesses to magicka!

Work it out yourself for a Breton mage ( much easier option to play!), who also has decent magicka (though less of it) without the pain.

If you want enough Magicka to cast a lot of Master level spells, you need a High Elf or a Breton, with birthsigns that give extra magcika.

I'm pretty sure that the Apprentice birthsign only gives 100 to magicka. The Atronach birthsign, on the other hand, gives 150 to magicka.

Also, your main source of magicka late game should be from enchantments. At higher levels, sigil stones can give +50 to magicka. So if you have a full set of armor all enchanted with fortify magicka sigil stones, that's +300 magicka. Plus 2 rings and a necklace = 150 more magicka.

You can also cast spells that give fortify magicka, but using magicka to gain magicka could be counterproductive if you don't know what you're doing.

Edit:
Concerning the question regarding leveling:

I find the attribute bonuses somewhat necessary because your enemies actually get stronger each time you level. So it's definitely beneficial to make use of the bonuses, or you might find your enemies too strong to deal with at higher levels.

Also, there is a certain maximum level to each character depending on its major skills and the starting level of each of those skills. So sometimes, you may not even reach 100 on certain attributes without the bonuses.

It's actually +100 Magicka for The Apprentice, and it's 150 for the Atronanch with a 50% spell absorption but at the cost of magicka regeneration loss.

Yeah... sorry about that. I tend to mix up Apprentice and Atronach magicka bonuses. :o
