What is the heart in the upper left corner for?

Good evening,
The red heart that appears in the upper left hand corner has a number "3" in the center of it. Could someone please tell me what this represents. As I can't locate that information.

the number represents the number of resurrection phials you have.

as long as theres a number in the heart,you will come back to life when you die.
