Ok, here is the problem. I covered what I thought was every quest so far and still couldn't get through the gate to the forbidden lands. I also couldn't get through the trees to the sea of woe. After talking with every character imaginable and still no luck getting through those gates I found another way.
I found a place where I could scale the rocks and walk the mountain top around the world where ever I wanted. First I used this to get past the trees and retrieve the relic from the shadow realm.
Then I did it again to access the forbidden lands where I have now found 2 more relics of power.
The problem is I need to get Mara's letter to actually pass through the gates and start another quest. The problem is that Mara is not next to her shrine like she is supposed to be.
Is this something that is now messed up by me finding other ways to areas I apparently wasn't supposed to be in yet?
Keep in mind that when I found access to those areas via scaling the rocks I had no idea about Mara. The lady at the Fargrove Inn kept telling me to come back later every time I asked for the woman searching the lost eagle.
Any ideas how I can find Mara?

No, that don't help at all. I had talked to Greymare and the lady at the Inn where I had to say something about searching for the lost eagle. The Lady at the Inn said some in regards to if I am looking the woman searching the lost eagle she isnt there now and I should come back later. Well, I came back again and again after completing other quests and always the same answer.
At this point I found a way to scale the rocks, and enter the Forbidden lands that way. I rescued Valdane and even got blood from him though I was never assigned a quest to get his blood. I have even went back to the Bolen fields but no one is there now. I also lost the "lost eagle" option when talking to the lady at the Inn.
I also got into the Vale of Ruin and retrieved another relic.
The only place I havent been so far is in the black swamp past those stone guardians. That is where I am stuck. I have a feeling I need to do something with this blood from Valdane but I cant get to Vartugg to get that quest because I cant get to Mara. Any suggestions?

I've never encountered this. Everytime I was supposed to meet Mara west of Lake Dread she has been there.
May need to talk to the house of tiger or dragon. They mention lots of animal aliases for people(Monkey is house of Fathien for instance)...
But for me its always started at Graemare leading to the Fargrove Inn, then on to Mara.

A couple of things...
Have you patched your game? If you're running the original release of the original game, you can have all sorts of problems with the quests.
Have you looked [url="http://www.gamebanshee.com/dungeonlords/walkthrough/summary.php"]here[/url]? The walkthrough summary lists everything you need to do, so if you've already done those things, then something else is the problem.

If you did not take the moonbridge...did you get a moonstone?

Yes, I completed the trial of elders, talked to the wizard, etc. I got the moonstone as well.
The problem is that I took the climb over the mountains to get into the forbidden lands and also used that route to get past the trees to go to the sea of woe. Hell, the 2nd relic I retrieved was from the shadow ruins.
My problem is I believe that because I rescued Valdane and got his blood before ever getting assigned a quest for it I cant see MARA to be able to talk to Vartugg. So dealing with that alter in the vale of ruins wont work and I guess I wont be able to get into the tomb of souls either. I also cant get by the council of stones.

I didnt find a moonbridge in the Black swamp yet so besides the quests I cant seem to get because of jumping ahead by scaling the mountains I am worried I may not find a way back up the mountains to get out of the black swamp as I never got past the stones by saying the word they want to hear.

I know I have read elsewhere on this forum (can't remember where, exactly though) that there is no way to get back out of the Black Swamp if you climb over the mountains. I am sure you have noticed by now that one side of a mountain may present an area that is easy to climb, but the other side has different terrain. I know it must be discouraging...but have you any saved games from before you started all this mountain climbing? Going back to one of those would certainly fix the problem. I am not sure what else to suggest.

No i have the same problem with my first character. I actually went into the forbidden lands without talkin to vartugg and then to the naga temple the free valdane. and now my quest is broken the vial of blood i retrieved from vladane is useless i took it to the altar in the vale of ruin and tried to place it there but nothing.
It seems if u try to bypass any part of the storyline it breaks the quest in some way u can still do the sub quests but u dont get any new mainn quests now it seems its up to u to finish the quest on ur own. the game isnt open ended u have to do it in a certain order
