Feeling Like the Orphan you Really Are? (possibly spoilers)

Post by dragon wench »

Having actually taken the time to develop a character has made me think a bit about the game world in some detail, and the great houses in particular.
Have you ever had the sense that none of the great houses really feel as though they could be a home for your PC?
To me, it seems as though each of the houses makes for an awkward fit in some ways. Theoretically, the best house for magic users is Telvanni... but they tend to be mercenary, ruthless and isolationist; they also support slavery. What if your fledgling mage is actually the warm and fuzzy peacenik type? :D

Or, there is House Redoran, technically the best place for fighters. However, the Redorans are generally pious and honour-bound. What if you have a Nord barbarian who has never set foot in a religious building and doesn't give a damn about honour?

House Hlaalu is probably the easiest to reconcile of the three (on Vvardenfell) houses, but there are problems here and there too.

So, the second point of this thread is: If you were creating a Great House-like faction what would you do?
Some Rules
* Keep it as lore-friendly as possible (yes, I know there's a contradiction in there somewhere :D )
* It has to fit into the atmosphere of the game
* While it can't actually be a Great House, it is enough like a Great House in terms of political clout and allegiance that the same restrictions apply: i.e you can't join any other houses.

My idea, still undeveloped, would be to create an order called "The Knights of Azura."
This organization, secretly founded by a select few in the Temple hierarchy (or Dissident Priests?), the Imperial Cult, and the Legion is dedicated to creating a bridge between Vvardenfell's two religious organizations. Their greater mission is to bring about a smooth co-existence between native Dunmer and "Outlanders," and, in fact, they were instrumental in your character being released into Morrowind.. (for obvious reasons).
The knights of Azura focus on Restoration magic, (possibly Illusion) and Speechcraft. While there would be healing missions, many of these missions would be as much about metaphorical healing and diplomacy. For example, quests would include having to negotiate disputes between individual Temple and Cult members.. or disputes between both Imperial factions and native factions.
This for starters anyway.

OK, over to you :D

It's a bit difficult fro me to envisage a faction dedicated to Azura (and in my case to the other good Daedra) trying to bridge a gap between one bunch of heretics and another. As far as they are concerned the Tribunal and the Nine are false gods. They might not be as dastardly as the followers of Dagon, but their objective, to overthrow the infidels, would be the same.

True, my vague romanticism got in the way there :D
Even if just an idea, it needs a better name.

Otherwise though, any thoughts on a Great House-like faction you'd create?

Dres and Indoril are options, I don't know much about them, other than that House Indoril are closely tied to the temple and it was mentioned in Oblivion that House Dres had renounced slavery.

The thugs.

Well it's sort of like the cammona tong but without the nice bits.
Main aim is to pull off the "big six" Several addtional Vaults placed in the game and VERY well guarded.
Unlike Cammona Tong likes and is liked by outlanders. (so no great house)

They may be intending to cover them, but they haven't actually 'covered' anything yet. Lots of landscape, towns, monsters etc., but no quests or joinable factions.

They have architecture. I don't know if you've joined the project but after you do you can see a lot more of what's happening. It's not even finished yet. Just planned.

Uhm guys.. I did not start this thread to discuss whether or not Houses Dres and Indoril are covered in Tamriel Rebuilt ;)

Here is the point of my thread:

An expansion of the Morag Tong would be nice, :) maybe something along the lines of a behind the scenes push for power among the Great Houses...
I've always felt the the current quest for the Morag Tong just seemed to me to be quite shorter than the Mages/Fighters Guild quests.
Maybe something along the lines of being the quiet enforcer arm of the Twin Lamps...just a few thoughts...

All the factions mentioned seem to be just normal factions, and not Great House like at all.
