Armor or Parry

Post by DenverDLfan »

I've finished the game with a Rogue/Mage/Battlemage/Budoka/Ninja Lord with excellent parry and ok armor, all medium of course. Now I'm curious about the heavily armored types.

All you seasoned DL vets out there: What's better Armor or Parry? Let's debate...

My two cents is Parry as it's better to not be hit than to always be repairing.

Armor or parry? That would be hard to say, I think. I like having both, frankly and if you are talking heavy armor, it is much more durable than medium so less repairing. I like having agile characters which adds to their parry score, so I don't have to sink tons of points into the actual parry skill. So, I guess high agility and heavy armor works for me. :)

Good point Kathy

I know both Armor and Parry is good to have, but I'm thinking about a new game targeting a Deathlord build. I feel I'll be relying more on getting hit and the armor takes the dent instead of parry where I don't get hit as much???

Well, parry is surely useful. To be perfectly honest...I have never noticed all that much difference in the armor in terms of protection. Not saying there isn't a difference but I still found my character (s) getting the heck beat out of her sometimes regardless if she was wearing the plain platemail or studded leather armor. The difference in my experience is mostly that the heavy armor doesn't require repairing much at all.

Deathlord class is lots of fun, plus you get the cool deathlord plate.

I have noticed that Agility makes my parry go up and magic items do too. But as far as I notice raising the "Parry" skill does not affect my character sheet.

Is it bugged (1), hidden effect (2), or did I just not notice it (3).

Thanks

(though I could be wrong..)

Parry has one element: Avoiding "hits" (or physical contact).

Armor has 2 elements: Avoiding "hits", AND damage reduction.

In fact, just based on my "feel" for the game - Heavy armor didn't actually provide a substantial "avoiding hits" to my high Agility/Parry character, but DID seem to provide far less damage when my character would get hit.

Like Kathy, I'll take both thank you..

Between the two, I'd go for Damage Reduction (i.e. Heavy Armor) AND a high Vitality, in that you will *always* get hit - but surviving that hit is often a matter of timing with potions/spells ..and damage reduction with higher reservoir of hit points allows you that time to heal.

Yes but my question is about points in the parry skill.

I understand 2 ways to raise parry on the character sheet

1 agility
2 items bonuses

The third way should be the parry skill, but I have tried points there and it does not go up. Is this a bug? That is my question.

But good thougts on armor and parry.

Hello,

There are a few ways to raise your parry skill.

Like you said, items (rings and trinkets), agility, as well as dexterity and heraldries. I found that adding advance points to your parry skill past 10 is a waste.

Hope that helps

I've noticed that too, and it is irksome because it costs a lot of points. It may be worth considering if you aren't seeing a difference to look at your character's agility. Maybe his or her's agility needs to be upped as well.
A character’s Parry increases along with his/her Agility and Parry skill.
IMO, if you have a class that requires parry, raise it to the level you need to meet the requirement...otherwise, it just seems to be more effective to raise your agility.

Its like that for most skills, unless your character progression has numerous learning bonuses.

I just found the assassin garb. Thats +10 armor and +10 parry. Pretty decent. I imagine the deathlord plate is much higher armor but I doubt it gets 10 parry.

Deathlord plate is armor +22 with no bonuses to strike or parry. Actually, for heavy armor black plate is a good deal:

Black Plate
Skill: Heavy Armor
Armor: +18
Strike Bonus: +5
Parry Bonus: +5
Strength Req: 44
Damaged: 1000/1000

I know most people who have heavy armor like the Deathlord plate better, but I like the Black Plate. It has a "look" to it. :) It has almost as high an armor rating as DLPlate, has bonuses for strike and parry and is very durable.

black plate

i agree with kathy there i have black plate on my cureent guy and on most my previous guys, parry mod on it makes up for the loss of ac in my opion and you get bonus to strike, although i use it with a lot of dl plate items also, looks good with that combo.

I'm afraid I sometimes go with the armor that looks good, over what is the best protection overall. I really like the Imperial Armor, so I keep a set in my inventory and mix and match with other pieces.

The deathlord pants made the character's butt look funny. Not that I was staring at it, but still. :o

Oh geez, now I have totally embarrassed myself and will be drummed out of GameBanshee. :p

Naw..

I'm a "straight" male - and I like a really good looking character as well. Esthetically I prefer the Argalia/Mythnir set, with the ninja garb a distant second. The druid stuff is just hideous. :D

My last character had the guilded mail - looked like a cheap spandex jump suit with "mummy" hands and absurd shoulder pads. In other words - Haute Couture of the mid 80's! :speech: :D
