Kangaxx in Watcher's Keep (Result of a Wild Surge)

Post by sultanselim »

I was a bit bored, and decided to play BG2 for the N+1'th time.
I created a sorcerer and started to solo the game.

The hardest part of the game was 3rd floor of Watcher's Keep, where you can not use magic in some areas.

One of those was the "Wild Surge" area, where a few quasits cast magic like crazy. I was trying to kill them, and all of a sudden, Kangaxx appeared as a result of a wild surge.

I instantly changed area before getting imprisoned. Than made my preparations and came back to kill him. And got my 2nd ring thus.
(As if I needed any more gear :P )

(I didn't use any mods whatsoever. Just the original patches. So I guess this is coded in the game)

O____O

There's a wildsurge table in the ToB manual. It says nothing about summoning Kangaxx, though there it is a chance of summoning hostile monsters. Not sure if the wild surges in watchers keep are at all related to that table.

Sorry, but until I see more proof or hear of more people seeing this, I'm going to go with fake. Was this CLUAConsoled? ô_O

I too want more proof; hopefully you can come up with it, because if you could... it would be pretty wicked! :D

I vote fake, since there already is a demilich in WK. And it's not the infamous Kangaxx. If the script in the room could summon random famous monsters, someone would have encountered something similar and talked about it. It's not as if the games are brand new :)

Whoa... Now, why should I try to fake something like this?

Age 30, been playing games for my whole life.
I am not a kiddo who came here to brag about a fake screenshot...

Believe it or not. That's what happened.

Those quasits were casting all random spells, and all of a sudden Kangaxx appeared. In demi-lich form. He made the usual entry :"You are doomed" etc.

I searched the net, and found a reference in bioware forums too.
BioWare Forums: Funny wild surge

I repeat.
I didn't use any mods, any console commands etc.
Just the patches, that's all.

You can inspect the screenshots to find an inconsistency in vain for all I care.

I'm a believer- that's enough proof for me. I kept getting hit by lightening in the original BG, so I'll believe the developers would put in something like that, if only for S&G.

wow...

My apologies for my accusation. I searched, but totally missed that forumpost. I guess it's a very small chance on the summon monster table. Awesome! O_O

PS: stranger things have happened. I imported my paladin from baldur's gate 1 to baldur's gate 2 and he had 2 quirks.

1. He'd instantly gulp down any potion of extra healing I'd give him, none of the others.
2. He tried to hide in shadows every few seconds, which is indeed quite hard in fullplate armor.

Was funny to have a psychotic paladin for a while though. "DON'T LOOK AT MY WOUNDS!!!!!"

I experienced some pretty peculiar wild surges - mass polymorph into squirrels/chickens kinda stuff. you can find some peculiar loot when you clear the room too - presumably another function of the 'make xyz' appear in inventory surge. I can't say that I can recall Kangaxx appearing, but I have had to flee before now. characters suffering terror and invisibility was quite amusing in a sick way - they all rushed around banging into each other at high speed.

I see no reason to say 'impossible' - checking the script might solve it.

Sultanselim: very, very cool.

Well done with the screen shots and Bioware link. The game is dated but still continues to dazzle in new ways.

Thanks for sharing that.

Haha, that is a pretty funny scenario, and probably another reason why I haven't used a wild mage before. ;)

Kangaxx is not a pleasant creature to have appearing on your doorstep. :D

Naa, on the contrary. I was happy with the 2nd ring :P (And if I had a thief, and used the ruse, maybe 3 :P )
You know, it's probably the best item in the game.

Though I guess the probability is really really low,
I might try taking 6 sorcerers to that area and cast spells continuously to see whatever else might be summoned :P

But I guess I'll be busy with Fallout3 soon :}

you said he spoke to you first, so surely it is possible to get 4 of the rings? I have 2 from pickpocketing him the first time round, it comes in handy

Yeah, pickpocketing him before you kill him is a handy way to take advantage of a game flaw... so it's not exactly cheating. :D

4 Rings of Gaxx would be nice.

Nay, I guess 4 would be a bit hard.
First of all, we pickpocket the Lich form. Here he appeared in Demi-Lich form. So I guess he couldn't be pickpocketed even if I had a thief.
Also, we could pickpocket Lich, because the instant he showed up, he came as blue(neutral) and we could pause-pick him. This time he appeared out of nowhere, and a dialog-box appeared afterwards. He opened the dialog, not me. And he was instantly red (aggresive).

But 3 would be a bit better than 2 anyway :P
