Shields not working

Post by Claudius »

I have noticed a couple of things about shields and the character sheet.

First if you equip a shield with armor +5 (example) the armor rating on the character sheet doesn't go up!

Also if the shield grants magic or fire protection that doesn't appear on your resists either (you access a display of these by clicking on your portrait in the character window or equipment...forgot which)

Does anyone know if shields are broken? Would it matter if I use a rotted shield vs. some ultra magical endgame one?

I believe you only get the bonuses on shields when you block with them.

Me: "It's a great way to get promoted, I know that much."

Thats funny I have thought all along that whenever you block it is like a stone wall ie no damage gets through. I haven't been blocking much though because theres so many hordes of things that I find I get hit from behind and the side if I am just blocking. Plus if I'm blocking I'm not damaging anything.

You might just be right though. And I guess that would apply to the magic protection etc. of shields as well.

I will try and see if I can examine my character sheet while in the block posture.

Thanks!

I've noticed the same thing - at higher character levels shields can be virtually useless.

High level opponents seem to be able to attack faster than you can block (generally), and blocking is near useless when you are facing multiple opponents. (..and of course high level opponents often have "henchmen/summons".

I also did NOT find that the shield was adding anything in particular to my characters defense beyond that the shield was actually blocking something (..accepting spell reflection). For a physical attack alone its a rather moot point - you either successfully block the attack or you don't.. and perhaps adding +12 (or less) to your AC is pretty much meaningless.

A few things to try:

Use a shield with a specific 100 percent immunity to something you are being attacked with. Then, while still utilizing the "blocking" function, rotate your character to be exposed to that attack. Examples:

A. Fire from a fire drake, keep your shield up, block the fire from hitting you, and then rotate your character so that you are hit with the fire.

B. Magic from any attacker likely to use it (same pattern).

C. Magic from an area attack.

In each case I found that the shield did nothing for defense. i.e. it did NOT protect against the Fire while using the Shield of the Dragon and not directly blocking the attack. Blocking from an area attack was completely useless.

This leads me to believe that the when a shield states something like Protection from Fire 100 percent - that what it really means is that the SHIELD won't take any fire damage.

This certainly isn't a conventional RPG spec.. AND as a result its HIGHLY misleading.

Its also nearly useless (for medium+ shields), because they can withstand a LOT of damage before needing repair. i.e. so what if my Shield of the Dragon takes 30 points of damage be it fire, magic, or physical attack? - I can always repair it or have it repaired.
