Talked with everyone, opened home, waited at dusk. No spies show up, can't find anything in the home but a few daedra books. Stumped.

Did you try looking at a quest guide? I'll try to help, FOLLOW YOUR QUEST MARKER THING. it never fails if it doesn't work, start a new profile and do it again. some profiles have issues with quests.
I can slam revolving doors.

Points to the house. I picked the lock. No one in. I'm wondering if becoming champion prior to the spies quest is a procedural program no-no?

Hehe did that to get the best skill book in the game right after. Jus follow your arrows I did it wrong also. Only one person showed up. And made the run to to the house and reported what I found. I think its a piece of paper or book your looking for. Not sure now that I think about it.
I only post with personal exp. So I will not answer anything about the dark brotherhood, and easter eggs.
