There is a katana that doesn't backstab, IIRC because of a bug, and that's Valygars katana.

Hmm, I always thought that the Spectral Brand is the best one-handed weapon for backstabbing, because of its additional cold damage. Hindo's doom deals 5-14 damage while the Spectral Brand deals 5-12 + additional 1-4 cold, i.e. 6-16.

Agreed.

has nobody factored in the % additional damage + the chance of stunning with CF?

I've seen backstab scores with CF that were shocking. you know - the ones where the creature just flies into bits on hit 1 and everybody is trying to find something dry to wipe their faces with.

I can't remember the details of the additional damage, but it can be huge.

(checked it 5% chance of +20 electrical damage - x backstab)

I have sometimes had a thief dual Hindo and CF, if they have lots of points in katana. (dual class may be called for). one of my characters was so deft with katana that he could face a group of enemies and end up with 20 ears threaded on each blade before the first enemy mage wondered why his spectacles had fallen off his face.

I am sure that the bonus electrical damage can be fine when backstabbing with CF, however it is unreliable(only 5%). Second, the weapon is only +3 and the enemies in ToB whom you'd want to backstab(like Demogogron, for instance) are immune to +3 weapons and less. Third, the stunning effect works on only some monsters(again, not the strongest ones), and allows save(which as the game advances, more and more opponents will do anytime).

The best weapons for backstab are:

Spectral Brand(upgraded with the lich's skull)
Arunduval(upgraded with liquid mercury)
Foebane

First. they're +5. Second, they do considerable amount of physical damage(more than the Hindo's upgraded katana). The Spectral Brand allows Piercing strike(THAC0 +10 for 3 rounds, which means that th backstab will succeed). The brand and Arunduval have a nice elemental damage bonus, making them able to strike through Stoneskin. And Foebane is great for backstabbing demons and so on because of the additional +6 damage, and because demons and planetars and the likes are immune to most of the elements.

Last time I checked, Foebane was a bastard sword, and therefore not able to backstab at all.

And also, Staff of the Ram doed WAY more backstab damage than either Spectral Brand and Angurvadal. A newly-created ToB char can surpass a deathbringer assault with this baby. :)

Ramming it up

The staff of the ram improved to +6 is pretty darn good! I was gobsmacked the first time I took on an army of fire giants with it and splattered them all over the place - you really can knock them all the way to hell.

my undead-hunter paladin was using the staff on and off until my last end-game, but I found that it didn't have as many advantages overall as Carsomyr so I switched back to that - the upgraded magic protection and de-buffing meant that he was often taking zero damage even when surrounded by enemies - something that the staff didn't emulate - yes it does a lot of damage, but in those circumstances Carsomyr was better. the enemy had summoned virtually an army and even though only some ever did damage (most didn't) it was a lot of hacking to make a hole in the ring.

annoyingly, Sir Anomen was reliant on Crom Freyr offhand - so couldn't use the staff, Imoen was using a sword offhand to increase her spellcasting and Anguvadel for strength in the other hand, Nalia (as high level mage, v good) had Staff of the Magi and Jaheira had Spectral Brand. So without another front-line fighter free to use it, the Ram missed out in the final battle.

This thread's about CF. Let's keep it there, please.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

back on topic

my latest run through is with a f/m/t multiclass and I have just taken CF from those naughty people at the compound - I had been using the staff of rhyn when I bashed the crap out of Kangaxx, but now I have my old friend CF.

I used Ursino's blade +4 from WK but I like the stunning effect of CF. on a backstab I did one fly-apart hit almost immediately - I'm levels 9/10/11 (I think) from just a few quests and the top level of WK. I have tried to keep the party size down more than usual - Jaheira and Edwin are in at the moment.

it's a shame cromwell cannot improve CF...
