No. it's not obvious. If you search the forums you'll find a lot of posts from players asking why they turned evil. And there are many more who didn't post. Playing a class which can become fallen in BG2 without preknowledge is like playing "russian roulette" with spinning the chamber anew after each shot.
You'll most likely get through one or two dangerous situations, but you'll get far more chances for falling during the game.
Fortunately for him DomTom doesn't play a ranger.
