Staff of Power

Post by limitedwhole »

Why no threads on the staff of power? Stun for five rounds with NO SAVE seems pretty powerful. You can always switch from magi to staff of power to use its spells, then switch back. It is available early. Pretty powerful. Allows you to not memorize Globe getting some much needed versatility at the fourth spot for fireshield or such early on.

Pretty awesome item. Shooting a lightning bolt that has the powerword stun effect is pretty cool.

I'll admit that the only reason I'd get the staff is for the no save stun, otherwise I'd stick with the Staff of the Magi for its granted abilities. I never really got into the whole globe thing. Besides, you can just as easily spook/charm everyone into submission. There ARE items which provide you with a no-save control spell. Pretty handy if you don't mind using them.

Yep, is this item game-legal or is installed by a special cheat-mod or something? In the vanilla game, your apprentices explode each time they attempt the Staff of Power. The best thing they can do is a Ring of Wizardry...

The Staff of Power *can* be made by them, but the chance of succeeding is much less than with the other items. I've had them make it for me without any explosions.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

When my apprentices created it they all died, but you could pick up the staff off their corpses.

Mine died, but tried it again after casting, bless, luck and some other protection spells on them which I can't remember, they survived. Don't know if it was cause and effect however.

You don't need to switch items to use abilities. You can have Daystar in your fourth weapon slot on a warrior and still use Sunray without changing items.

One of the reasons my thieves often ends up with the SotM instead of my mages. ;]

A no save stun sounds nice, but, should any of your apprentices die during classes, you get no experience points for the quest. That's quite frustrating, especially since mages level up a bit slow (if you don't solo, that is), and every exp comes in handy. You can get good items without killing teenagers :)

I agree, but why is killing teenagers considered bad, yet killing older people, or the unborn OK? I am disappointed that I have been unable to find a way of emulating in SoA what I did in BG1, namely winning without killing at all.
