Invasive Advertisements
I've been experiencing a pop-up ad from one particular adverstiser on the website that presents no visible way to "close" the ad. All of the others I have seen feature a "close" button...even though it can be tricky to find ...but this one does not. The problem is, the ad covers the majority of the screen, making it impossible to interact with the website while it is up. The only way to escape it is to close the browser window, as the ad also "covers up" my navigation buttons, address bar, browser toolbars, etc.
To the best of my memory, it is a soft-drink ad...Sunkist I do believe. If I encounter it again, I will note exactly who the advertiser is and update this post.
Is anyone else experiencing something similar?
Update: the advertiser in question is indeed Sunkist.

I have some issues with a "Nike Soccer" (http://image.ugo.com/Nike/nike-soccer_peelback.swf) advert which looks to be flash, and should apparently roll out. Problem is that it does not roll out but still covers the menu buttons.

I don't recall seeing the Sunkist ad myself, but I'll forward this on to UGO and have them check it out.Chanak wrote:I've been experiencing a pop-up ad from one particular adverstiser on the website that presents no visible way to "close" the ad. Can anyone confirm that this problem only exists in Internet Explorer?

The sunkist-add popped up just now, and I found a Close-button on it.
It's in the upper left corner.

Yes but sometimes the ad scrolls along with you and keeps the close button out of reach. This only happens about 50% of the time.Fiberfar wrote:The sunkist-add popped up just now, and I found a Close-button on it.

I don't know what the capabilities of your web browser are, but on some of the leading ones, you can reduce or increase the size of viewed content. If the close button goes out of reach, try reducing screen size. Just a thought.xraygord wrote:Yes but sometimes the ad scrolls along with you and keeps the close button out of reach. To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
Similar problem existed with the "Codemasters/overlord_immercial_v1.swf" advert just now, which had "Advertisment Loading", but was still rolled out over the menu buttons, so I couldn't navigate the site, taking up the top 25% of the screen with it's overlay.Xandax wrote:I have some issues with a "Nike Soccer" (http://image.ugo.com/Nike/nike-soccer_peelback.swf) advert which looks to be flash, and should apparently roll out. Some ads apparently bypass pop-up blockers as well, as I've been experiencing as of late. For reference I use IE, and as a rule don't experience pop-ups. Some ads here, however, bypass the blocker.

Use a HOSTs File
I dislike Flash so much that I have FlashBlock active all the time. There are several places on the net that collect advertiser URLs and offer downloads of their collections to add to your HOSTs File. Well worth the time to look for them, add the collections, and never see many such ads ever again.

There's a new ad featuring a show called Torchwood. Whenever you roll your mouse over the advertisement, it pops up into a completely separate box containing a picture. This blocks out many links on the site itself.
Now, what's worse is that the close button is located right on the banner ad itself, so anytime you close it, the instant you move your mouse it's going to open right back up. There's no other conceivable way to fix this problem I've noticed. I've even tried not moving my mouse and simply hitting page down, and that doesn't work. It still pops up.

The problem is that this site lives and is run by advert revenue, so many of us do not want to block the ads on this site, because they make the site possible.Kiwi wrote:I dislike Flash so much that I have FlashBlock active all the time. Thus it is a really bad road to go if you like a site and especially use the content on the site.
