Rogue necessary?

Post by Brightblade »

Hey I was about to create a party but I'm not sure if I need a rogue or not. My main character is going to be a Paladin and I don't like rogues very much. So I was wondering can Rangers for example fulfill the role of a rogue?

You can probably make a party with a paladin and do a very good job of the game. Rogues do have some special skills of their own which are quite good though.

Spoiler
Try teaming up with a barbarian if you want some anti-trap skills. Your pally will be able to handle the dialogue (instead of/as well as a rogue) but the game might be a little bit of a challenge with a paladin. A ranger will make a good scout.
Balance in all things...

Rogues are one of the most versatile classes. Rogues can be designed to do many different things. They do not have to be evil at all. Think of a rogue who focuses on conversation skills like diplomacy and sense motive. They have many skill points so they make great party spokespeople. You can make a rogue who is Neutral good who is a scout type character. You can make a rogue who focuses on combat - mix in a level or two of fighter and you have a very effective flanking "attack of opportunity" killing maching.

Rogues are certainly not necessary - you can be successful in this game with or without every character class - but I don't adventure without one. IMHO they are too flexible and interesting to leave out... :)

I agree rogues can be fully useless if you get a wizard to unlock and scout, eventually a cleric to disarm.

But yep it's too bad to not use them because they are interesting in many area. Yes talk leader of the party, scouting and fighting are good point. But better, a same rogue can be efficient in all those area.

Additionally saving spells for unlock/disarm/scouting is a good choice for a game not kind with you for resting to restore the spells. I quote sometimes I could steal some treasures without to fight by using sneak plus eventually a ring of invisibility. I quoted a few stuff in house/neutral env to nasty steal but I haven't tried. They are a good character choice to be the secret finder of your party.

With druids I find those characters better setup than in any other CD&D game.
