Ok I haven't played the game in a long time, and I'm trying to do as many quests as I can, I seem to remember a quest to free slaves from the slave compound in the slums, but I can't remember who gives that quest, and I can't find it from the walkthrough either.
Anyone remember?
Also, the guarded compound in the temple district, is that part of a quest? I seem to remember some talk about it being part of an unfinished quest, but not too sure.

The slaver compound quest comes from Hendak the barbarian, after you finish freeing the slaves in the Copper Coronet - and I don't remember the guarded compund being attached to anything, although I could be mistaken there!
I sincerely wish we could re-consider this plan from a perspective that involved pants.
Interestingly, the quest appears to link to jaheira and minsc - the slavers quest was supposed to be part of the minsc storyline, or so I heard.
when you go in the copper coronet, Lentian the owner asks what you want - if you ask about other entertainments you can go in the back. the way I go in, I end up near the slave pens - you get attacked by the guards then get to speak to hendak a barbarian gladiator. if you then go into the arena, and through, you have a conflict with the Beastmaster and having defeated him, you go back to the slaves and free them.
hendak goes ahead of you and the freed slaves attack the guards. hendak and Lenthian have a scrap (I usually finish off L myself) and you then get told that there are more slaves. the way to get to them is through a secret passage from the CC to the slave ship, which has become a building near Bayle's place. once that has been dealt with...
...you retrun to the CC and get rewarded.
there are also ambushes by slavers and Nalia's betrothed is involved in slavery.
Jaheira gets cursed because she fought slavery.
there is a guarded compound in the temple district and that is such a tough encounter that you could expect it to be the fight at the end of the quest - as it is it is free-standing. lots of nice treasure.
it is commonly thought that the slavery issue was going to be more of a storyline and things linked together.

spoilers regarding Nalia ahead:
If you have Nalia in your party, you get to act against her fiance Isaea, who is, as mentioned above, involved in slavery and many other illegal dealings. You need to collect proofs of that - IIRC, one of them is a note saying that slave merchants have their hq in the temple district, and Roenall has striken some bargain with them. So it is kind of linked, but not much - there's no "I'll put an end to your wretched life, slaver!" dialogue
, only a tough fight and some nice loot.
end of spoiler.
@Celacena, how are the slavers linked with Minsc? I must have missed that...
I always thought it's rather unfair he has no personal quest.

If you go by the other entrance at night when they are moving slaves.
Minsc gets angry and attacks them without warning. I can't remember if you have to talk with them for this to happen. You can of course just blunder in as I did at first.
