World of Warcraft trains terrorists!

Post by DesR85 »

While browsing Computer and Videogames, I came across a rather silly article titled: World of Warcraft trains terrorists! Read below for more details:

The frontline of the war on terror is about to move... to Azeroth.

According to Kevin Zuccato, head of the Australian High Tech Crime Centre, terrorists are being trained in games such as World of Warcraft to scout out simulated real-world environments, and train in weapons that are "identical to real-world armaments."

Zuccato told an Australian Security Industry Association conference that terrorists no longer have to travel to the target they want to attack to carry out reconnaissance, but create a virtual replica and rehearse an entire attack online. Bad news if you live the Tower of Azora then.

"We need to start thinking about living, working and protecting two worlds and two realities," Zuccato said.

Reactions?
''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price

I'm sorry the forum rules don't allow me to fully express my amazement at the stupidity of some people. This is a GAME. I suppose that these people were also behind trying to llegalise the VCR as it would cause massive uncontrolable copyright breach. Well it did but it futhered our technology masses. I think if terrorists play video games we should ttrain teenagers to play against them then either A: beat them so much they get depressed and go home. OR, B: mislead them all every single detail.

I agree with Ampasand...

This completelly bull (expletive caught by filter)

When some guyss made Wolfeintein 3d and then Doom, many many people, including people of the US government, create a great scandall that teenagers were going to grow violent and that was a danger to national security.
People associated Doom and other games to the Columbine incident.

Few years later all speech stopped, cause they created this:

America's Army - Special Forces - Home Page

An oficcial game made by the US army to train and invite teenagers.
Take a time in the page, look at the links and so...

Cmom, where is the coherence in all that?

How in the world can people acuse games, when it is a constitutional right(mistake) to sell and buy fireweapons in the stores like they sell icecream. And also... when they created their own game too... cmom...

Pure sensationalism and hypocrisy, imo.

@Ivan Cavallazzi: Please read the forum rules. Expletives or vulgar languages are filtered and come out instead in the form of asterisks.

Please be guided accordingly. Thanks.
7) Again, please refrain from swearing, trying to avoid the filter i.e. “!” for “i” etc. won’t be tolerated. The only exception to this is a genuine word such as the film director Alfred Hitchc0ck, etc.
This applies to emoticons or smilies as well. No obscene gestures, words etc.
Sorry for my english... =/

Major LOL!

WoW is harbouring terrorists now?

No seriously, anyone who has ever been in a situation of some real danger knows that it is not anything like the sort of experiences you can get from a computer game. My greatest concern is that WoW players may get too little real life training!

Edit: It is like saying that you get really good at handling relationships if you play a lot of Sims.

Anyway, thanks for the high comedy, DesR85! Good one!

You're welcome. :D

Sometimes, I just wonder how stupid people can really be at times. What is the world coming to?

The most amazing thing is that this man is supposed to be "head of the Australian High Tech Crime Centre"! All you people from Down Under, please tell me that this guy is actually a kangaroo in disguise, lest I find it too depressing to be part of the human race anymore and go live as a tree!:speech:

Hey the term "down under" includes NZ. We have severed all ties to that individual and are waiting for a outbreak of endangered sense (like common sense but far rarer)

Hmmm, WoW, perhaps not. But I have read something similar happening in the sim world MMO's, like Second Life. The article said that terrorists cells were 'meeting' in these 'worlds' and really I suppose if companies like IBM have set up shop there, why not Al-Quaeda? I think it was in the Economist, I'll have a dig around and see if I can find it.

Internet jihad | A world wide web of terror | Economist.com

Okay that's the link. It's not so much about MMO's being terrorist hangouts, but that does come up with Second Life, but about how the web is being used by them.

My apologies then.

Have you heard of this guy before? Is this part of a long-term campaign against computer games, or is he trying to get funds because he likes his job and dislikes terrorists?

This isn't stupid, Cartell. This is cynical demagoguery. It happens everywhere, and it is an attempt to play on the irrational fears and hates of an audience by a poltiician or a political appointee. I'm sure Zuccato knew better; after all, you don't get to where he is by being a fool. And the Australians are due for a major political election, soon. Do the math. :D
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I realize that that is the reason why... but you completely ignored my theory on how to stop terrorism... We shouldn't be trying to protect Azeroth.... we should be shipping WoW and PC's that can run it to all the major terrorist orginizations. :D Get them all so addicted, all they want to do is play WoW.

Problem is, what if the majority of those terrorists don't even know how to use a computer? :p Would be pointless to play WoW, let alone even use a computer.

As for politicians, I have totally little to no respect for them at all. Ever since the Hot Coffee incident back in 2005, my respect for them have dropped to an even all new low. Damn politicians. :p
