Using all level up points

Post by Aleron »

Do I have to use all my level up points, or can I save some for next time I level up?

In NWN, you used to be able to save as many as you like, but in NWN 2 you can only save 5 per level.

Bad news for certain builds, but whatcha gonna do?

Why would you not want to level up? You do a bunch of hard work to get to that level and you don't want to do anything else with it?
Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.
It goes you, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, Popo's stool, Kami, then Popo.

Well, there is a tactical reason to save skill points on level up (which is what I think the OP is mentioning). If taking a class which have few class skills, then saving points to another level if taking a class with more class skills, then you can get more "bang for your buck".

I rarely do this myself, very rarely, as I find the skill points you get are enough to do what I want to do, and because one character shouldn't do it all himself, so I like to rely on group members.

So I can cheeze! eg: Raise 2 levels of Fighter, and save 4 skill points, then raise a Rogue level after that and max out those 4 points on stealth or speech skills.

Well, in most RPGs I play I need more than 1 point to up higher level skills.
For example; if I had a combat skill of 10 and had 1 skill point left, I might need 2 skill points to be able to make my combat up to 11.
I assumed this was the same here, unless there is another reason why I cannot up my combat skill with just one point left? Perhaps you can only up it to a certain level per level up?

NWN2 works with D&D 3.5 rules. Skill purchases follow a few simple basic rules:

- A character gets a certain number of skill points at level up, depending on the class s/he picks for that level. This is then modified by the Intelligence bonus modifier of that character to a minimum of 1.

- A subset of skills are purchasable at a 1 point for 1 rank rate which is determined by the class chosen. These have a max rank limit of up to Character level +3.

- The rest are purchasable at a 2 point for 1 rank rate. These have a max rank limit of up to 0.5 x (Character level +3).

Under normal rules, I believe, you can buy 0.5 ranks and cannot carry forward skill points.
NWN2 does things slightly differently by implementing carry forward skill points (to a limit of 5) but cannot buy 0.5 ranks in a skill.
