NWN2 on the road

Post by drdad94 »

For you serious tech types out there... I'm wanting to take NWN2 with me on the road on a laptop. I'm about to buy a new one and I need some advice on video cards and processors. Will the Nvidia GeForce GO 6150 card run the game? How about the Intel Graphics media accelerator X3100? Also, I like the AMD processors. How far up the Turion 64 X2 series will I have to go... TL-56? TL-64? If I have to go Intel Core Duo how high do I need to go?

If any of you have tried these combos I'd like to hear from you. Thanks for the help!

Ewwww...tough question.

I would look at this list: Tech ARP - Mobile GPU Comparison Guide Rev. 6.8 (scroll down, nvidia is on the next page) and pick something with at least a 7800 from nvidia or a x1800 from ATI.

Those would allow you to play, but not at the best res or framerates.

There are actually some reasonably priced notebooks that have 8600gt M's in them and a C2D at 2.0 ghz or above for around $1300-1500. That is a reasonable price for a gaming notebook.

There are many many other factors to consider too. Like screen size, ram, etc.

I like AMD for desktops, but I prefer Intel for notebooks. The C2D is better than a Turion IMO, and you are going to want at least 2.0 ghz.

thanks!

Yep, I figured I'd go 2meg of ram. Looks like you've seen some laptops with that combo for that price. From who?

Also, everything now seems to come with Vista Premium. Will it run on that OS? Or will I need to strip that out and put XP on?
Thanks!

Np

Asking for gaming laptops these days is like opening Pandora's Box!

Sooooo many options and configurations and resellers....I spent months doin my homework before I bought mine nearly2 years ago. And if I had the cash to get a new I could easily do the same again.

I narrowed my choice down to an ASUS, but there are other good ones out there that aren't Dell.

What I came across in the couple minutes I spent looking at notebook reseller's I had bookmarked was this one: Xplorer X5-7900 Notebook very reasonable price IMO.

But I encourage you to take some time doing research before you pick.

This website has tons good info: NotebookForums.com - Notebookforums.com Notebook reviews - laptops reviews

....and read as many reviews as you can when you have an idea of what you want.

Thought I'd add on to this thread rather than start my own...

I am also looking for a new laptop that will be able to play NWN2 and other current games. I have done many hours of research into gaming notebooks already, and I'm getting bogged down with all the choices. I figured this forum was a good place to find people with laptops that can play NWN2, so I'm wondering if anyone has a particular laptop that they're happy with and would recommend.

These are the main things that I've been searching for:
-Standard 15" size range, possibly smaller portable sizes. 17" seems a little too big for me (I have low STR, what can I say?).
-NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT or comparable video card, maybe lower? I'm having a hard time evaluating video cards. They're one thing I need educated opinions on...
-Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.0 GHz CPU speed or better
-2GB RAM
-A price that's somewhere around $1500, but I'd stretch close to $2000 if I really thought it was worth it.

The Dell XPS M1330 is cute and slim, but pretty pricey. Customizing my own on the Dell website quickly gets me up around $2500.

I've been looking at a bunch of different ASUS models--F3 series, G series. The F3 Series models I found on NewEgg.com seem to be in my price range, but they have GeForce 8600M GS cards, which I'm not sure will keep up with the stuff coming out these days. Any thoughts on that?

The Xplorer X5-7900 that Cyrinn recommended looks pretty good in terms of specs and price, but I'm not very familiar with CyberPower.

I'm particularly interested in the laptops that other people have and would recommend. Thanks!
