Some people have suggested Dream Theater. I cannot stess enough how much I admire them as musicians. The best album is in my opinion still the breakthrough album Images and Words, but it may seem a little dated by now (I think it is from 89).

Do you like instrumental music? In that case I can recommend Steve Vai. His music is far from being power metal, but it is very extravagant, elaborate and virtuoso. Any album would do in my opinion.

Eve though it's old, it doesn't mean it would be too dated!
I've album "Spell of Iron" from Tarot, which was released at -86, and it still rocks!

IMO they make some great metal. But other than those mentioned there is also Disturbed although it is in the lighter end of metal. Oh yeah almost forgot Ill Nino and Lacuna Coil which makes some very good music as well.

I bought the new Kamelot (Ghost Opera) and the new Symphony X (Paradise Lost) albums.

The Kamelot one is a huge deception. I guess that with a little less distortion and with drums a little lighter, they would be ready to be the opening act of the next Céline Dion concert.

The Symphony X album is excellent, it is their heaviest. I would like it even better if the sound was more powerful.

I got hold of the Overture of the Wicked EP from Iced Earth, and I must say I was plesantly suprised.

I actually prefer these versions of Profecy, Birth of the Wicked and The Coming Curse.

I can't wait until I the new album comes.

Did you like The Glorious Burden or is The Overture of the Wicked actually much better than The Glorious Burden?

I take it you're one of those Barlows-fans then?

I like The Glorious Burden, but if the remaining songs on the new album holds the same level as Ten Thousand Strong, I belive it'll be better than The Glorious Burden.

But then again, the songs about Gettysburg 1863 is a masterpiece.

Yes, I prefer Barlow to Ripper, especially live (Ripper is probably the less charismatic signer I saw in my life), but it is not just about Ripper. I was also disappointed by Horror Show, not that it was bad, but I did not find it as good as Something Wicked. I loved only 3 or 4 songs on The Glorious Burden, but it is true that the Gettysburg songs were good, although I would not call it a masterpiece.

I just got Gods of War Live by Manowar, and frankly, it's the best live album I've ever heard. I thought it was going to be hard to put out a live album that was a lot better than Halford's Live Insurrection, but they actually managed to to just that.

Go get it now!

Well, Nightwish is remotely close to Gothic, though only if you are thinking of their older production (Oceanborn, Wishmaster and perhaps Century Child), but the three others as well?

I think Sonata Arctica might be a bit better than Nightwish although not as popular. Stratovarius is the foundation of all North-European gothic metal, they're oldies, but goodies.

Well, HIM is a bit out of the line, cuz it can be defined as "love metal" rather than "gothic metal".

You're right about Nightwish, thats why I listen to their older albums only.:laugh:
I don't like the hyped, popularized new albums.

Actually, if you remove the hype around the Once, it is actually rather good album.

I agree with HIM, it's in border line between Gothic and Love metal, though I would rank it as Love metal. I think Valo himself has said that HIM plays Love metal...

Then, we come to the Strato and SA. Both, in my opinion, are much closer to power metal than Gothic metal. Especially Stratovarius. Though the latest album from Sonata Arctica is more progressive metal, kinda close to Queen...

Today was released new album from Nightwish, Dark Passion Play, and I heartly recommend it to all!

It really kicks in but, and hard!
