Looking for RPGs with Martial Arts

Post by newb365 »

I just picked up a copy of Jade Empire (xbox) and started playing a Tiger Shen character.

I know NWN/NWN2 allows you to play a D&D style Monk. And Dungeon Lords has Ninja and Shaolin Monk classes.

What other RPGs allow you to play a martial arts type character?

Aside from Jade Empire, I can't think of any other RPG that uses martial arts, let alone, even have any martial arts characters at all. GTA: San Andreas and Ragdoll KungFu to name a few have martial arts but they're not RPGs.

The Wizardry series has always featured both Samurai and Ninja classes. D.W. Bradley continued with the idea and added the two classes (plus the Monk and Zenmaster) to Wizards & Warriors. Then there's Sierra's action RPG Throne of Darkness, which is set in ancient Japan and features a few classes you might be interested in.

And there is also Prince of Qin which sort of lets you design your own style. It's basically an action RPG set in ancient China. I played it for about an hour but hey, you might like it.

No, please. Don't remind me of that game. I hated it soo much! :( It drove me nuts after playing it for 10 minutes.

There's even Might and Magic VII, which featured the Monk. Not really as flashy as Jade Empire, but hey, it's a Monk. ;-)

BTW: Huzzah for Des, Clonckers is back! ;-)

But you don't like that type of games in general (top-down/isometric view, action RPGs) so your opinion doesn't count ;) .

True, but opinions are opinions. You can take it or leave it. :p And just for the record, I don't hate all top-down games. There are some which I like (Disciples series and Heroes of Might and Magic 3 to name a few), but not the rest of them. ;)

Humm, I know it's probably not what you're looking for, but Acclaim has made a MMORPG based on the ancient Asia, and therefore it's focused ONLY on martial arts. The graphics are actually pretty good, and obviously the 'moves' in the game are inspired by moves from real martial arts.

For example, I played a Shaolin Monk for a while, later on I found a video on youtube with real Shaolin Monks doing thing, was actually quite similar.
The game is called 9dragons, you can read about it here
