Elf Cleric/Mage Multiclass

Post by denzeman »

Hi guys,
Does anyone know why an elf cleric/mage milticlass cannot be created?
Also, if I decide to go for dual cleric-->mage and choose elf, would I be able to dualclass it to mage?
Many thanks,

I'm not sure why one can't be created. There's probably some esoteric explanation, but all you need to know for the game is that you can't. ;) Use a half-elf instead.

Dual class characters can only be made from humans, so no, you would not be able to dual class an elf from cleric to mage.

This is a powerful class combination, but I'd caution you against relying on it solely for either your clerical or arcane support. I find this class works best when it acts as a support caster to a dedicated cleric and a dedicated mage. Later on, of course, it can be a fantastic caster in both areas, but it takes a while. Dual classing also involves "losing" the first class' attributes until the second class' level is higher than that of the first class. You need another cleric (or druid) and mage (or specialist or bard) in the party to take up responsibility for the spellcaster roles while the dual class is getting up to speed.

Of course, if you take a half-elven multiclass cleric/mage, you won't have that problem, but it will level up more slowly in each class.

It can't be created b/c in AD&D 2e, it's not an allowed multiclass combination.

I like Gnome Cleric/Illusionists a lot as well... just trying to widen your options. :)

Why would anyone want a c/m?

Bad selection of weapons and armor. He will never be a battle mage/cleric.

The mage side takes too long to grow means less damage from level critical spells.

A silence spell makes them ineffective.

A cleric/mage has potential to be stronger than a regular fighter. Anything combined with a mage does. Even a bard.

That's your reasoning?

Heck, the Robe of Vecna on a C/M is reason enough alone to want one.

Put some Cleric spells in a Sequencer and you have another one.

If you play ToB, you'll get bored with single-classed Clerics because they top out in abilities pretty early (meaning you get hardly anything after level 20 or 25) and you may as well have another class in there.

@Klorox,
those were my initial thoughts too... but then I remembered... this is IWD, not BG2/ToB... :D
So, no Robe of Vecna... Unless there's a mod out there that adds it?

I'm pretty sure I've seen a mod like that somewhere, but I can't remember where

Klorox,
if you come across the mod again, please post a link here. I'd certainly be interested in seeing something like that, and others might be too.

I might be thinking of a mod that brings IWD games into BG, but I'm pretty sure one does exist that I initially described.

I can't find it in my usual spot (sorcerers.net) so I might be wrong though.

EDIT: Since this is IWD1 we're discussing, not BG1 or 2, I think your best bet is multiclassing any class with Fighter or Ranger (unless you're unable to do so). It just makes the game a whole lot easier.

@Klorox - you're probably thinking of IWD2. There's a mod at WeiDU.org which adds Ribald Barteman to Targos.

If I recall correctly I believe only human characters may dual class. So an elf would not be able to. If someone else mentioned this I didn't see it.
