Slooooooow.....

Post by dragon wench »

I have noticed for the past couple of days that it has taken a very long time for pages to load at GB.. and I haven't experienced this anywhere else I've visited on the web.
I'm wondering if anybody has found this to be the case, or if it is something weird at my end???
Maybe we have a lot more visitors because a number of different games have been released recently???

Just curious anyway.

No, you are not the only one. I had noticed it too. I guess it is just temporary.

I never noticed it until today. I wonder what could be causing this.

I'm wondering if it has to do with the release of no less than three new games in the last little while, namely:
* The Witcher
* Hellgate London
* Mask of the Betrayer

Maybe this has caused an upsurge in site traffic????

Oh, believe me, it's not just you. You have no idea what a stretch on one's patience the news archiving system is now.

Yes, it's (partially) the traffic. And we'll probably not see a big slowdown of visitors with Mass Effect right around the corner. But we're aware of it and trying to find a solution. Buck might have more info, but rest assured we'll try to fix it soon enough.

Possibly. There are over 250 users on right now. (And they don't even register. Pfft.)

Maybe Buck is updating parts of the site, possibly relating to the aforementioned games? I really don't think that 200 something users would slow us down...

I sent a note to Buck a couple of days ago about this, and he confirmed that he was a matter of increased traffic for newer games.

Oh, I definitely believe you. I'm finding that checking the forums I mod is taking a long time, so I can just imagine what the news archiving system must be like..
I'm only pleased we have the new forum layout, which is very helpful when determining which forums have new posts.

Ah, OK, thanks for that, I was wondering if it was a setting or something on my end, so good to know!

I've been having the same problem, but traffic on a website is sometimes inevitable.

Erm, average users online used to be over 1,500 with no website slowdowns.

With a considerable hike in traffic on our subsites for The Witcher and Neverwinter Nights 2, our server is seeing very high load during peak times (daytime US hours). I've already contacted our rep at Verio and am working on the paperwork for yet another significant upgrade to our hardware. If all goes well, we'll have something in place by next week. Please be patient in the meantime :) .

vBulletin's "Who's Online" stats haven't been entirely accurate for a few years now. We've seen a small decline in forum traffic as some of our bigger games become less popular over time, but we certainly haven't gone from 1500 users online to 250 online. I think it has to do with some of the coding changes we've made over the years to keep people logged in as they browse the rest of the site. One of these days, I'll have to poke around and see if I can figure out how the active users are actually being calculated.

Just wondering, has the upgrading done already? The site has been rather speedy today. Of course, it may be that the traffic isn't that big during Sunday...

Not yet. It'll be sometime this week I think. Asked Buck about it.

I had been making tweaks to keep things running smoothly all last week, but as of this morning we are officially on the new server. It seems considerably faster for my purposes, but let me know if you encounter any other slowdown issues or error messages.

Same here. It's a lot faster now. Thanks, Buck. :)
