When I do the Arena quest, I get told that if I impress the crowd, they might give me stuff, and I see a little health-like meter that I'm pretty sure represents the crowd's enjoyment, but in the couple of times I've done the Arena, I've never gotten that meter full and (consequently, I think) never gotten anything off the crowd.
How the heck do I impress them??

Well, I think while its full they'll continue to cheer you on, and an occasional flower or possibly a small bit of money may be throw into the circle. Nothing big or anything like that. To answer your question of how to please them, you must kill the enemies quickly without taking much damage.
Fable God, Hence The Avatar.
Fable God pretty much summed up on how to please the crowds. I was also not able to get the meter to the maximum. In the beginning, it's easy. Then, the further you progress, the harder it becomes. Near the end of the arena challenge, the meter hit rock bottom. ![Frown :(](./images/smilies/)
''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price

A couple of spells to get the meter full and keep it full throughout. Use enflame to slaughter the bees, undead and other lesser creatures. Use multistrike and its range counterpart to bring down tougher opponents quickly. Timestop also works well when dealing with the trolls and the giant scorpion.
Physical shield is also handy in keeping you alive. Make sure you have tonnes of mana potions though. At least 50 to be safe.
