Pool of Radiance (Gold Box) training bug...

Post by Odium42 »

Hello. I'm new to this forum. It's been years, but I tracked down Pool of Radiance from the old SSI Gold Box series of D & D games. I've been looking forward to revisiting this game/series. I've run into a bug, however.

I have a problem that occurs when I try to train a character. They have enough experience to reach the next level, and they are at the proper location to train for their character class (thief, magic user, etc.). When you go to train a character, the following menu is available:

-Create new character
-Drop character
-Modify character
-Train character
-View character
-Add character to party
-Remove character from party
-Save current game
-Begin adventuring
-Exit to DOS

The problem is that the "Train character" function doesn't seem to do anything. I just keep getting the same message at the bottom of the screen that says "choose function". Just to see what would happen, I've tried all of the other functions at this menu. "Modify character" doesn't work either. But all of the other functions work just fine.

Do you know how I can get the "Train character" and "Modify character" options to work in this menu? Is this something that I can fix by modifying a game file? I hope it can be fixed without having to throw out the current copy of the game. I would like to keep the story and character advancement that I have played so far.

Looking forward to some help. Thanks!

Hi Odium,

It has been a while since i've played PoR, but If I remember correctly, you need 1000? gold to train. If you don't have enough $, then I believe a message appears at the bottom of the screen indicating "not enough gold". With today's computers speeds, that message probably isn't much more than a flicker on the screen. So sell any useless junk you have collected and pool your money to one character. + when the training hall guy asks you who you want to pay for your training, choose the character that is holding all the $.

+ the modify option is only available right after character creation point.
Once you "begin game", you are no longer able to use modify.
