I urge you to really rethink the console. I mean, it might be cheap, but that's because every other console out right now has much better hardware and games coming out for it, although the last bit is in my opinion. The Wii leaves no room for any peripherals or additions for hardware, and to be honest, I think that, after a couple of months on the market, the Wii will choke, stumble, and die. =/

In my opinion, it really depends on what games you like. If you like the games for the Nintendo Wii, then getting the Wii is a good idea. If the games you like are on another console, then it is a good idea to get another console.

What I do know is that laying your hands on one right now is nigh on impossible. Our son really wanted a Wii for Christmas and we've been trying to acquire one for the last few months...

I'm not into consoles myself, but if I were I'd get a Wii. I think they offer features no other platform does in terms of gameplay, and they also have a lot of games like Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy etc. available (backwards compatible from the Gamecube).
The latest Legend of Zelda game (almost as hard to find as the Wii), plays with all of the new Wii features, while games like FF and any other Gamecube game need a Game Cube memory card and controller.

As Des says, though, much of it depends on the types of games you like to play. Personally, I wish every gaming company made products for each platform out there.... unlike the deals Bioware, for example, ties up with Microsoft..

I do wish that it is possible, though at the same time, it is very unlikely for this to happen. It will remove the purpose of having exclusive titles in the first place. Exclusive titles are very important for consoles as it is a major selling point for consoles and the main reason why people will choose one console over the other. Another factor is that developing games for multiple platforms is very expensive to the developer and very few would wish to pursue this option.

Something to understand, though, is that exclusive titles are also done because of hardware needs. Many of the deals Bioware has made with Microsoft in the past have been because the X-Box was the most powerful system on the market. In fact, it remains the most powerful, functioning, console on the market, and thus the wiser choice.

You will not see these deals with the Wii (however, SquareEnix, developer of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest has been discussing signing with Nintendo exclusively) because the Wii is, admittedly, a face lift for the Gamecube. This is, by no means a bad thing, it does mean that it will lose much of the developers and have to rely heavily on the intuitiveness and ingenuity of its remote (which I feel is gimmicky).

Ugh, AS IF!!!!!
(Sorry bout the whole 'Nintendo fangirl ranting' thing...)
Just take a look at some of the software for the Wii now! (Admittedly, some of it is just mainstream gimmicky tripe, but still...) And also the fact that the Wii is so popular, I still cant find one!
And need I remind you of DQIX's DS exclusivity?

Hey Joe...
We have one at the house...
the Mario games are fun, and the Wii fitness is fun for the family.....
but reading between the lines in your Morrowind postings....have to warn you that your limitations might influence your choice....some of the games require lots of movement, for example the bowling, baseball, of the fitness games require real life activity movement...
now the Mario games do not, other than my own limitations, ie hand, eye and my stupid brain.... :D
You might want to try one out before you decide...

have you been lucky enough to get a nintendo wii ??- hahaha.

the word lucky has been wrongly used or spelled i would use the word unlucky.

heres why. (rant time).

1. the controllers are just a gimic, the idea that they are supposedly better for your hand/wrists/arms/etc... is just madness.

2. the x box 360, x box, nintendo gamecube, ps2, ps3 are all better consoles.
they cant handle serious games, nintendo is just making silly games now, e.g sonic& mario olympics, wii aerobics (or something), and most of there games.

3. they said they would only cost £90 2 months before they came out, now they cost £150 ? (that was a guess). i think thats a bit harsh on the customer.

and i could go on all day. personally i would rather have any of the consoles i stated in my second second reason (only the first line)

thank-you

only just read the post above me so im gonna write a reply to that now.

i agree with hill shate except that the wii wont die, because it is a GIMMICK !!!

ALSO JE00 PLEASE DONT BUY IT, I URGE YOU !!!. youd have more fun on a cheaper console (xbox - ps2 - gamecube. so dont buy it for price

ok first of all. bowling, baseball, boxing and tennis require barely any movement.
my freind plays bowling on a chair... tennis on a chair... baseball on a chair... and boxing on a chair... all the movements are just flicks of the wrist. also i have tryed one out.

@ fable-kaima: I don't mean to attack you or anything, but I'd like you to define a "serious game". Shooting monsters in Halo? Chopping someone up with a chainsaw in GTA?

I'd buy Wii for Zelda: Twilight Princess alone.

And besides, there's nothing stoping you from adding a little more movement when playing than just moving your wrist ;)

Sounds to me like you're a tad bitter, fable-kaima! And I don't get that you're ranting AGAINST Nintendo in one post, and FOR Nintendo in the post just below it...   Make up your mind, boy! Are for Nintendo or against them? (Sorry for the condescending tone in the above lines, though. (NOT! :mischief :) )

@fable-kaima,
Threads are not locked until they violate Game Banshee's posting rules. Thus far, this thread does not merit a lock. My above post was simply a warning.

I'm not a Nintendo fan so wouldn't have one personally. Not my sort of games as I'm a FPS, Strategy and RPG fan and really can't stand Japanese graphics (ala Final fantasy etc). For me they're aimed at kids (or big kids lol). I can see how it might be fun if you were having a party and were a bit tipsy but otherwise the Wii holds no interest for me other asking people if they like their Wii?? Or if they have let anyone play with their Wii lately?? .... and other such purile jokes ;)

The computer is pretty much my platform of choice, simply because the games for PCs are (in my view anyway) so much better. But, we do actually have a Wii in the house, because our son wanted one so badly (even though he primarily games with the PC too). I have to say, though, that the more sports oriented games can be fairly entertaining with the Wii, and in comparison to other consoles, I think it offers something unique. And you are right, we've had a few get togethers, and after several drinks the Wii can be rather fun on occasion.
However, I have something of an allergy to anime themed games, and the general childishness they seem imbued with, so for me, there really is no contest. Because I primarily play RPGs, I'm a PC gamer all the way.

have been looking for a wii for my household too,but have already decided we want one for the following reasons :

1) its good harmless fun that everybody can join in with (especially when friends are round and the beer is flowing!!!! :D )

2) our family also likes guitar hero 2 and 3 on the xbox 360, dance dance revolution on the xbox, and the games with the bongo controllers on the game cube

gimmicky some of them may be, but tremendous fun none the less
