I Quit Playing Morrowind Today

Post by Gobatcha »

I gave up playing Morrowind today. My chief complaint is the PAINFUL dialog system.
I was introduced to the Elder Scrolls games by Oblivion. I liked that game, but the compass made quests TOO simple. By reading the Oblivion forum I learned of Morrowind.
I picked up the Morrowind GOTY edition and began playing. The lack of a compass brought me joy. The dialog brought me endless frustration.
I got tired of reading every NPCs possible dialog options to perhaps just maybe learn a new tidbit about something that could help me out. And the options were pages and pages long!
Call me weak. Call me a hater. Take away my RPG cool points. I don't care. The Elder Scrolls team did a great job improving the dialog (among other things) when they built Oblivion.
That's all I've got to say about that.

Next Up...

I think I'm going to pick up The Witcher. The coverage on it makes it look like a winner. I'll shell out the bucks right after Christmas.

probably the best thing you ever will do in life is NOT play morrowind again...take it from me i stuck that game out 3 separate times with 3 different charters, and it was long and arduous, and i lost 5 solid months to that game, hopefully the next game of choice for you will bring you more joy than this.

I felt pretty much the same way after awhile of playing the game. Then I started getting into the mod thing, and it really made the game better by leaps and bounds. There are mods out there that address this issue by trying to put more dpeth and realism in the dialogue options. There are also tons of mods that provide companions for your character, some of them very well written. Try looking through the sticky threads or seaching around some of the mod community sites maybe. :) It never made the game come up to the Baldur's Gate Series or Planescape: Torments standards IMO, but it helped immensely.

Guess what? I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!

I think Dialogue in Oblivion is awful. In Morrowind yes it was generic but when reading it it's less annoying than walking down an Oblivion street hearing everyone saying the same thing and beggars suddenly assuming an upper class accent when questioned about rumours. Morrowind dialogue is easy to change too. In Oblivion you need expensive microphones and editing software to make the dialogue decent. In my opinion it was much much better in Morrowind.
