I'm afraid we crossed posts. ;) I found CRE files, I just can't access them. SK won't look at any CRE files or browse for creatures that aren't in the main SoA directory.

It also won't let me change the problem ones, giving me an error 1025 message about "missing CRE value."

EDIT: Attempting to open any CRE files via Search, in other subdirectories, simply opens SK in the main directory, where it just looks at the same CRE files it always has. Could copy them over, I suppose.

It looks like you're stuffed then unfortunately. As no one else has chipped in with any suggestions it looks like the problem has only two solutions. Either put up with the scrambled text, or start a new game.

A shame it's come to that, but I guess we both knew the pit falls of mixing mods. I doubt this is the first time you've been bitten, I've suffered similar fates more often than I care to remember. We still keep doing it though, the rewards when they work are worth it, if only because it gives us motivation to give that old favourite one more run through.

Mod group is the same; I just reinstalled all of them, including BG2 itself, after COM Encounters, and its removal, caused entering some areas to crash. But yeah, it seems that I'm stuck with this, lacking a decent tool to find and edit CRE files. SK was evidently starting to head in that direction when development stopped back in 2001. It simply won't look at CRE files in subdirectories, and moving those files into the main directory doesn't help. It still refuses to display the contents of those files. Fortunately, this doesn't affect a great many NPCs, but still, it's a roleplaying breaker, if you know what I mean--and I'm sure you do.

Near Infinity has the ability to edit .CRE files. I'm not an expert though, and I'm not sure if anything special needs to be done to access custom .CRE files.

I had the problem with the long sentences in place of mod NPC names before, unfortunately I had to start a new game since even a re-install with all the mods again didn't fix the save game.

Sorry, not much help, but I personally didn't find a way to fix the problem.

Thanks for the idea, VonDondu. I've downloaded NI, and am giving it a cautious look.
