Cloaks and rings of protection
Do the saves on these items apply only to physical attacks, or mental and magical ones, as well?

They add the stated number to all saves, so should include all forms of magic/wand/spell attacks, and against death and petrification (including gaze attacks). However, having found the hard way that magic resistance doesn't protect against imprisonment, I would be dubious about anything (except things like Berserkergang) working against that particular spell.
I checked them in IEE by the way, so the above is based on that not experience, except with regard to imprisonment.

Thanks to both of you. I was wondering about that. I'm trying to buff up the item-based resistance of my party, and these are easy means at this time. I am aware of the various items that can help later on.

MR doesn't protect versus Sunfire, Imprisonment, Dragon Breath, Implosion, Bolt of Glory, Globe of Blades/Blade Barrier, Fireshield Red/Blue/Aura of Flaming Death, Storm of Vengeance.
Items of Protection are great because the saving throw bonuses they provide offer protection versus enemy disabling attacks which are hard to protect against otherwise. Of course, their throws help vs spells, wands and so on. That's why items of protection +2 and +3 are so rare and prized. I really suggest robbing Elminster in Jaheira's quest.

I'll give strong consideration to that. Never thought about pickpocketing the old blowhard before.
But if he has a +2 protection item--you're right, +2 and +3 protection items are very rare, and that's as it should be. One of the best-balanced of the shop mods, Ruad, requires 20,000 gold pieces, 4 rings of protection +1, and 2 Rogue stones to produce a ring of protection +2.

Arguably MR shouldn't work against the physical effects of any AOE spell, such as fireball, but it should work against Imprisonment.Saros wrote:MR doesn't protect versus Sunfire, Imprisonment, Dragon Breath, Implosion, Bolt of Glory, Globe of Blades/Blade Barrier, Fireshield Red/Blue/Aura of Flaming Death, Storm of Vengeance.
I never have found the +3 ring, I was somewhat surprised that rings like +3 5' radius, +4/+2 or +6/+1 didn't get included in ToB. Especially because of the incorrect implimentation (IMO) of multiple protection items. Protection rings and cloaks shouldn't be usable with any armour, but should be usable together. Not really bothered though, plenty of other ways to improve your A/C.

One of the strangest implementations that I have found is the light armour found in Durlag's tower in BG1. If you're so clumsy that you drop it at the beginning of SoA, you can use it with rings even though you can't in BG1galraen wrote:Arguably MR shouldn't work against the physical effects of any AOE spell, such as fireball, but it should work against Imprisonment.

Posts removed. I'm not looking for spoilers, at least not without spoiler tags, and I want this thread to stay on target--not to turn into a generic "How to steal the power stuff in the game, and where" kind of thing. Thanks.
Apropos of the subject, I'm surprised nobody has created a mod that let you use a shop's facilities to "craft" your own items, given 1) certain spells, and 2) very expensive/hard-to-find items and ingredients. It could even be made into a quest, requiring the location of several pieces of a torn manuscript (using a rather cliched example, off the top of my graying head) to turn into reality.
