Transmuters ?
I'm playing a transmuter, and i'm just wondering, if there are any transmuter-spells around ?
what effect does your specialization, have on your mage ? the only thing i can see is, that you've got a few spells you can't use (opposite school) ...
... by the way, me as transmuter can't use abjuration spells, isn't that worth a lough for people who know what i mean ?

I believe you have chosen a difficult calling, my friend. No abjuration spells=no defenses.
Your specialty, as I recall, makes you more effective with (in your case) alteration spells. When using this class of spell, anything requiring a save by your target is shifted 1 in your favor, as well as you saving vs. these types of spells yourself. Of course, the REAL benefit of specializong is that you get one extra spell per level.....

Wrong, Trip....the extra spell does NOT have to be of your specialty school, it can be of any school except of course the opposition school.

does that mean, transmuters belong to the alteration school ? (i thougt transmuting would be a school on its own ...)
btw, beeing a transmuter does not only mean no defense, it also hardly gives you any possibilities of dispelling any protections (ruby ray is the only thing i found till now)
thx for answering

@TrIp-WiRe: You are right, those are the original 2nd Ed rules, but they were never implemented that way in the CRPG's.
It would be quite confusing having a 'special school spell slot' I think.
Btw in the standard rules a specialist wizard has 2 opposition schools. So specialists are way better in the CRPG's.

You can cast an opposition spell from a scroll, but you cannot scribe it into your spellbook. So, no memorizing opposition spells.
A transmuter is a mage of the school of alteration, speciaizing in the altering of matter.
Abjuration spells deal mostly with magic protections and getting rid of them. Not a good thing to be unable to use, IMHO.
If you are not experienced with BG2, I would advise a different choice. I think conjurers, invokers and necromancers are the best specialists. Watch out on invokers, they have TWO opposition schools, both pretty good ones. Illusionists ain't too bad, either.

Being used to it will not help you when you realize how bad you need these spells when facing the really tough opponents. If you don't have the spells necessary to breach their defenses, each will end up being a much longer, deadlier battle.......
But, hey, maybe you like a challenge. Kind of like playing a wizard slayer, IMO; same concept of professional limitations, but in a different way.
