Start over or continue?
I went back to BG in late 2006 after not playing it for perhaps seven or eight years. I stopped during the 2006-7 holiday season. At the time. I was in chapter 5, having completed the cloakwood mines and last camped in Ulgoth's Beard. I have just attempted to pick up where I left off, but find I have no good way to determine which quests I have completed or am undertaking. I know some are recorded in the journal, but there are a lot of incidental encounters that go unmentioned. I half suspect it would be easier to start over instead of trying to pick up all the pieces - any thoughts or suggestions?

I would say that it all depends on whether you want to ensure that you have done everything. Usually when I play, I leave some sidequests out anyway. It makes each game different. If you have finished at Cloakwood, so long as you can get into Baldur's Gate, you can finish the game, so it is up to you.
One of the advantages of playing in Tutu (a mod) is that you are given much more information as to what you have or have not done. If you want to be certain that you have done everything, you will have to start again, but there might be hints with regard to undone quests in the contents of your backpack.
