Football in the US of A

Hm... Maybe I should try Football Manager... Sounds like a little fun, actually. (My wife will think: "Great, another computer game! As if he didn't have enough already.") Heh...

About what club one holds dearest. WHY do you cheer for your teams?
Myself I said (at the age of fourteen) that if ESK EVER climbed to the top series in swedish football... then I would cheer for them from then on. It was a little like "when pigs fly" or "when **** freezes over" and I meant it, at the time, just like that. But I grew fonder with my home town and one day, fall 2002 (I THINK, I've never been good with numbers and years) they actually DID it. And since I'd given my word... well... I've been cheering for ESK ever since.

What about you?

@prof. Moriarty: Heh, I'm actually quite the opposite. I generally cheer for the team I think play the most beautiful football, though I might be a little bit biased towards Barca. I very rarely support any underdog and frequently find myself thinking they shouldn't be in tournament X in the first place.

Well, I also have this fling for Serbian second tier side Macva Sabac, but that is entirely related to playing FM with them.

Regarding Capello I believe he is a very good choice, but I also think many Englishmen have to lower their expectations somewhat. Quarter finals aren't that bad considering the players available.

Hah! Since I'm a sucker for helping out friends in need (a regular Brother Theresa I am) I actually ventured into the local Arsenal dive and had a chat with my buddy Kjetil behind the bar. This is a guy who has Arsenal tattooed all over himself. I even picked out the fonts for some of his IMHO ridiculous paintjobs. Anyways: When I told him that a fellow simian, and a female of the species at that, was in dire need of help, I had him bouncing off the walls.

It seems what you have to do is visit podcast.com and download the necessary software. He'll get back to me this evening with the URL's you need to complete the process of becoming an online footie fanatic.

I'll just edit them in here later.

I never had a choice, I was committed before I could walk. My mother was a died in the wool, cut me and I bleed blue Pompey supporter. She and her sister in law used to drive around the country in my uncles car (he was abroad serving in the navy at the time) following PFC. So I've never been anything but a Pompey supporter, just like my dear old Mum always wanted, so at least I fulfilled one of her ambitions for me. My other sporting interests however are of my own choosing, only casual interest in Il Viola, but fanatical about my beloved A's, less so about the Raiders these days.

Heh it's been quite a while since i posted anything here, and i'm hanging around in a football topic of all things....

Hi C Elegans how is everything? Long time no see

Still playing D2? And how is the neurology work going?

As hard as it may be to get some decent football on television up north in this continent, here where I am (spending some months in Argentina now) it's a piece of crumble cake

To my shame I admit that before coming here I didn't even know Boca or River existed... but after seeing the Superclasico a month ago (plus about a million other games from the Copa Sudamerica - River-Botafogo was magnificent!) I won't be so quick about forgetting them. This really is the most football crazy nation I've ever been in, it's quite sad actually that their most talented players are all in Europe.

Indeed. It has to be remembered however, that football in South America can take on ugly hues at times. Fan violence is not uncommon and maybe that is making the talented players grab the first opportunity to go to Europe to ply their trade. (Italy is also becoming like that, sadly)

But as you said, the football mad nations of South America have produced more than their fair share of talent over the years. Remember Pele, Maradona and the more recent stars such as Ronaldinho and Kaka.

I am neither a Dutch, French or Spanish speaker. And for that matter, neither am I a yankee or a tommy. But the place where I'm from is as every bit football crazy as some of the European countries.

@Galraen: I'm not overly happy with the draw, but I have to say I was surprised Arsenal didn't succeed in piercing through Portmouth's defence.

Unfortunetely I have no time for D2 anymore, I don't even have time for FM. I've both got a baby, a new student and some new projects at work. Work is going fine, I've recently accepted a position as guest researcher at a leading US lab, which is why I enquired about watchting football in the US in this thread. I'll be living in California for about 1.5-2 years from March next year.

What about you? What are you doing in Argentine and how long are you staying there? Do you live in Buenos Aires? Have you learnt tango yet?

I'm fine, although the heat here is killing me a bit more every day... I'd never thought I'd say this but I'd actually like to have some rain now (which is quite a crazy thing to say for a belgian

) I'm staying here for a year in a college exchange program, studying Graphical Arts at the university of Cuyo in Mendoza (on the west side of the country, next to the border with Chile), so unfortunately I haven't seen much tango yet, but recently I've started Salsa and Reggaeton classes so as not to look like a fool when I go out dancing with my Argentinan friends. Maradona, Riquelme, Batistuta, thats all fine and such, but I'm already an "hinchada" of River

I actually lost interest in the Dutch competition a long time ago. Don't know why. Quality, perhaps? I don't think that's it, really. The Italian League is having major problems on its own and Inter's superiority isn't making things any prettier either.

Edit: oehh, Milan vs Arsenal in the next Champions League match. Now, that's a game to watch! Any bets, people?

Anyways, Milan are performing quire poorly this season. Really dissapointing to see them halfway down the table. And it is for that reason I think Arsenal can do enough to win the tie. Go Arsenal...

They'll have to perform a lot better than they did against Burnley, who deserved a lot more out of the game than they got. Great cup tie.

My bets are on Milan, even though Arsenal has fared rather well. But still, in my opinion Milan has better team, and as they are the home team, that will give them the edge needed for winning the game.
Though it probably will be tight match, 2-1 for Milan I say.

Wenger played his second string against Burnley. And once they got the lead, Arsenal just sat back and absorbed all the pressure from Burnley. Why exert yourself when leading in a cup game, especially against opposition such as Burnley? Not that I am discrediting them, mind you. Burnley did put up one heck of a fight but just didn't have the quality or luck to get a goal against us. Still, just think if Adebayor, Hleb, Rosicky and Fabregas had been in the team... I don't think it would have stayed at 2-0 for long, do you?
