A question (possible ineffective spoiler)

I had pickpocketed Duke Eltan and got a Nether Scroll. First time I played, I had no idea what Nether was, I thought it was something like, you know, Ether. Heh. But after playing BG2 then Bg1 again, I kinda raised an eyebrow. It has no effect, I guess, but still... Anything? I mean.. why does it exist? To justify the spell Eltan casts to kill you when you reject him? =P

Sure it isn't the History of the Nether Scrolls? Maybe he uses the scroll to conjure the book so you can't mess up the game?

It has been such a long time, I am not sure. It could be so, then this topic is meaningless and my rotten memory is to be blamed :/
