Modding the default NPCs (in Tutu, with SK)

Post by anarchistica »

Crazy as i am, i think the NPCs in BG1 aren't all that balanced. In terms of alignment, Good has a ton of good Fighters and good/decent other classes. Evil has the best Wizard, the best Cleric and two of the best fighters. And some other decent characters too. Neutral got the shaft with average/crappy thieves, crappy druids, a half-decent Cleric, a pathetic Wizard and only half a fighter, who is crappy to boot.

On top of that, with Tutu you got all these fresh new kits which aren't used by the original NPCs. So, i'd like to make some changes. I'm not a power-gamer but it'd be nice to not feel like i'm playing with NPCs that feel a bit "wrong" or NPCs that make the game far less enjoyable.

Comments and suggestions are very welcome, especially as i'm planning to form an all-neutral party consisting of Branwen, Faldorn, Garrick, Safana, Xan and a Warrior-ish PC (probably a Monk or Barbarian).

Good

Ajantis

No change, doesn't seem appropriate or useful.

Alora

If i would want her for some reason i'd make damn sure her abilities suit a burglar. Open Locks, Find Traps, then Hide in Shadows and Move Silently.

Coran

BG1 has 7 Thieves, more than any other class. Half of them (Imoen is optional) are multi-class. Half the Thieves take forever to get (Coran counts for half), meaning their abilities have been "messed up" already. I don't get it, do you? To make matters worse, Coran is a half-elf with 20 Dex who steals from the rich and sometimes needs to hide in the wilderness but for some reason decided to go on a Wyvern hunt? Wtf? His broken Dex only gives him +1 to hit with missile weapons anyway, why the need for that? Oh yeah, +10% to all thieving skills. I'd reduce his Dex to 18 and divide his thieving skills over Open Locks and Pick Pockets. Or make him a 19 Dex Elf.

Dynaheir

No change.

Imoen

I put her points in Open Locks instead of Find Traps. Imoen is sneakily reading Gorion's letters, how else would she be able to than by opening a locked drawer? What traps would she be finding anyway?

Khalid

In normal BG he comes with a long sword and a shield, why the heck does he dual-wield bastard swords in Tutu? I'd undo this change and put all his proficiency points in Long Sword.

Kivan

Archer-kit. He's a Ranger with 17 Dex, i'm sure he would've been an Archer if BG used BG2's engine.

Minsc

No change.

Yeslick

I think one or two additional points of Con would be appropriate. Now he has 17 Con, the same as Khalid and Jaheira. And Kagain has freaking 20 Con! It'd compensate for the lack of high-level spells too, if only a bit.

Neutral

Branwen

Priest of Helm-kit. She's neutral and all about fighting. Somehow i feel she'd need some other change to really be able to make use of those Spiritual Hammers. Maybe some fighter levels? And if i do that, should they come first or after?

Faldorn

Shapeshifter-kit. Aggressive, anarcho-primitivistic type (yay!). She also has pathetic stats (remniscient of a certain Druid from BG2 ;) ) and summons a Dread Wolf. I'm sure that Dread Wolf is attracted by her female werewolf howls. ;) Come on, she even seems to claw at you in her portrait!

Garrick

Garrick is mr. average. He's a bard with 13 Int and 15 Cha... and 14 Wis? I'm think the Skald-kit would be ok for him (i gave him that at least). He is fairly honest, hence the low pick-pocketing ability (heck, he left his group because they used their performances as pick-pocket-aiding distraction). He's not a great fighter, so not a Blade, nor a ridiculer, so not a Jester. If you just keep him singing you can forget about the part of him being "a warrior of great strength and skill" (he's got the virtue). Or, perhaps even better, switch his Str (14) and Dex (16). There, a warrior of great strength and skill.

Jaheira

I set her Dex to 17, in line with BG2. I'm not sure if that's enough to make her "viable" though. Multi-class healers kinda suck at low levels, IMHO (no raise dead/summon insects/etc).

Quayle

I've never used him, so i can't really judge, but one thing stands out for me. 10 Wisdom. Seriously, he starts with a 15% chance of failing to cast a spell. It should be 12 at the very least, no matter how nutty he is. With all those pure-class Wizards and Priests around he needs all the help he can get, and that is even if you don't take into account how late you get him (stupid BG1 NPC Tweaks won't work for me :( ).

Safana

She stayed with pirates and is very charming. The swashbuckler kit's description ends with "the epitome of charm and grace". It does seem to fit her fairly well, sort of. I'd also change her special ability from Charm Animal (?) to Charm Person. Her thieving skills should probably go in picking pockets and opening locks, i'm not sure what she starts with. In any case, she is pretty hard to reach (at low level), requires you to steal from Flesh Golems after getting past Sirenes (and other things if you've got Siren's Call) and can't be dual-classed to a Wizard... she needs all the help she can get.

Skie

The nth female thief in the series, and the precursor to Nalia. Why doesn't D&D have a "spoiled brat" class? I have no idea how she could be made into a "viable" character. You get her late and she's inferior even to Safana (mostly because of getting her late). Her thieving skills would have to go into stealthy things too, and no kit seems appropriate. Hmm...

Xan

No Magic Missile. No Shield. No Scorcher, no Web, no Stinking Cloud. No Fireball. No Lighting Bolt, no Cloudkill. A pure-class Specialist Mage with a +3 weapon but 13 Str and 7 Con (at least he's got 16 Dex). No Tenser's or Fireshields, only Haste to boost his fighting abilities. What to do with him? Make him a Fighter/Mage and play with his stats a bit? I plan on taking him (all-neutral party) but i'd like some punch at least.

Evil

Edwin

Edwin is funny. With two Rings of Wizardry he had about 21 Magic Missiles in my last game. Maybe his amulet should be a ring instead. ;) Since ShadowKeeper probably can't do that, there's no need to change him otherwise.

Eldoth

If i'd give him a kit it would be Jester, though i'm not sure if i think that's appropriate. In any case, his Str (16) and Dex (12) should be switched. Seriously, this guy's special ability is making poisoned arrows and even Garrick has a higher Dex? Another option would be simply changing his special ability to Charm Person, making him the male counterpart to Safana.

Kagain

His Con should be 19, not 20. Aside from that, he's fine.

Montaron

At 16 Str, 17 Dex and 15 Con Montaron is actually pretty good.I didn't use him last time because i didn't notice this and had a F/T PC. I don't think he requires any changes.

Shar-Teel

Her voicing seems to justify making her a berserker but as far as i'm concerned she's perfect. I'm not sure if she starts out with dual-wielding, i'd probably reverse that if that was the case.

Tiax

A Thief/Cleric with 16 Dex and 12 Wisdom. A crappy multi-class with crappy stats. Any idea how to "fix" him?

Viconia

A pure-class Cleric with 50% magic resistance and 19 Dex... what more could you want? The only two thing that bugs is her Cha. A Drow who reduces your Reputation by 2 having 14 Cha? Her biography indicates people won't give her a chance, why would she be able to charm them so much than? Aside from that, maybe give her the Priest of Talos kit, if only because you can.

Xzar

Compare him to Edwin. Xzar can't get Mirror Image, Blur or any Invisibility spells, but he can get Identify and Detect Invisibility. Xzar has a better AC and is better with a sling. Edwin gets a bunch of extra spells and +2 HP/level. The last thing seems crucial. With no defensive spells, Xzar is an easy target. Edwin gets on average 4,5 HP/level, Xzar 2,5. And you never use that sling against worthy targets anyway as you're too busy firing unlimited Magic Missiles and a bunch of Melf's Acid Arrows. Unless you use them both i don't really see how you could mod Xzar to be preferable to Edwin.

If you'd like to change their classes, kits, proficiencies and abilities, this mod might be of use:

G3: Level 1 NPCs

It doesn't touch alignments, though.

Yeah i've got that one, but it's a pain to do everything in DOS. :p Also, the zero-level thing was bugged for me, Xzar kept having 25 HP at level 1, even after several reloads. :(

Good thing you brought it to my attention btw, i wasn't sure if you could give custom kits to NPCs but apparently you can.

EDIT: I made Skie and Imoen Adventurers and Alora a Burglar. It was fairly tempting to make Minsc a Feralan but in the end i decided not to.
